I would stay away from Ray Marine, I have had three, and none of them worked as they should.

I bought the Humminbird handheld this year for tournaments. It worked well for the little I used it. Had clear reception out in the middle of Leech and Winnie. I bought the one with batteries but kind of wish I would have done the rechargable.

I can’t say anything good or bad about other brands, but I’ve used Standard Horizon products since the ’70’s.

They are a company that stands behind their products.

Here’s a great radio at an affordable price with all the features a person needs for ease of use and safety.

    Gs1000x

    *Affordable and Ultra Compact Size
    *Submersible JIS-7 / IPX7 (3.3 feet for 30 minutes)
*SC-101 DSC Digital Selective Calling with Position Send, Request and Distress
    *NMEA Input and Output
*Selectable Channel names or position information shown on display
*Programmable Scan, Priority Scan, and Dual Watch
    *Easy to use simple operation
*All USA/International and Canadian Marine Channels
*NOAA Weather Channels with Weather Alert
    *Replaces older Eclipse+ Models
    *Overall Dimension: 2.4″H x 6.1″W x 6.7″D
    *Flush Mount Cutout: 2.0″H x 5.2″W
    *3 Year Waterproof Warranty

If your looking for a hand held…can’t help ya much there.

I am looking for a fixed mount, I guess I should have specified earlier.

Here’s a perfect example of the customer service from Standard Horizon.

I bought my marine radio from Jolly Ann Marine over three years ago…guessing about 4. The second year I had the speaker in the mic become intermittent. Not a big deal because I still had the regular speaker. It forced me to bring the motor to an idle while radioing because of the noise.

I forgot/didn’t know there was a 3 year warranty on them. I sent an email to the company expecting to pay a flat rate price…now it’s discontinued AND out of the 3 year warranty period.

    The response from Standard Horizon?

Send it in, we’ll cover it under warranty…No Charge.

…and that is why you’ll never see a different brand radio in my boat.

BK, when I read this, that was post number 31,000!

ReefRat, I’m using a Lowrance radio and haven’t had a problem. If I ever do need a new one, I’d get a Standard Horizon based on the above post. Search this site for a good antenna also, there was a recent post about it.

I’ve ordered from Jolly Ann before and have had nothing but great service. For me (in MN) I got free shipping and no sales tax, plus my stuff was shipped really fast. (Wade Kuehl from Jolly Ann posted in this thread).

    Just my $0.02.

ReefRat, This Standard Horizon VHF Radio is a good option at a good price. Like Brian said, they have good service and a good warranty.
