Looking to get my wife one for Christmas. All of her friends have MP3’s. She don’t want the biggest and baddest but she has a ton of music she could put on it.

I know nothing about these gadets. What are some things to look for? Anything to deffinately stay away from? Any advise is apprieciated.

Oh yeah, I have a $250 budget. If I come in under that she can have the rest of the $ for itunes or napster.

I have an iPod and really like it. The wife wanted something she could also listen to. We were due for an upgrade on our cell phone so got her a new phone with an MP3 in it. She loves it.

    Ben,
you might wanna take a look at the Zunes too. I’ve got a 120G model and love the hell out of it. I’ve got over 9200 songs, over 50 videos and 40 pics and still have over 70 gigs left.
Easy to use program is installed from Zune’s site, and you plug your Zune into the USB and let it work. I know hardly anything about ipods, but I would definitely put my Zune up against one.

I have had several mp3 players and 2 ipod classics. The only reason I have had 2 ipods is because I gave the first one to my wife so I could get a bigger one. The one I have now is the 160 GB Classic. From an end user standpoint I think the ipod is great. Very easy to load music onto and very easy to use the player itself. The other good thing about them is you can store more than just mp3’s. I have not had a Zune so I can not speak to them, but I would assume that they are similar to the ipods. With as many songs as she has I think the only ipod options you have are the Classic or the Touch. Both of them can be found here: ipod store

Not saying that this is where you would want to purchase an ipod just a good place to get the specs. If you shop around you should be able to find a better deal.

Good luck. If I see any bargins on the web in the next few days I’ll let you know.

    iPod touch

wifi to browse Internet or check email
    install tons of fun games
    video
    YouTube

I have an iPhone and love it. iPod touch is very similar but without the phone service. She won’t be dissappointed. Very very few people return an iPod once the get one.

I recommend the iPod. Apple invented this application and there equipment is the best. The new iTouch is the hot item (although not cheap) and has nice features including ability to do movies.

I-pod touch all the way here also!!! She can get onto the internet any place there is wifi. Coffee shops/book stores/you name it!! I just bought a 32 gig for $268. The 16 gig is about $175 at Sams club. The rest of the $$$ she could use for the i-pod applications(games/movies/songs). That should get her about 3500 songs. They are amazing.

If you don’t need the video or internet, just music. Take a look at this. I have this unit. Size of a small match box. 4 gig unit holds plenty of music. Includes FM reciever.

It would be easier to figure out what she would like if told us what her activities include or how you think she would use it. For example if she runs or walks she might like to carry a MP3 player or a Ipod shuffle. Either one could hold enough songs to last all day without having to listen to the same song twice. I have a little 2GB shuffle and love it when fishing, I just clip it onto my shirt and listen all day. The convenional Ipods are bigger and not as nice for the average active person and if you want to watch a movie it takes time to download the movie onto it. Personally if I want to watch a movie I would just get one of the personal DVD players which will also play CDs.

There are too many uses to describe without knowing how she would use one.

I like the Ipod for being user friendly. But the dark side is what happens on your PC. If you have an older PC or older version of windows, the apple software running on there is a memory hog and is a royal pain in the !

Thanks for the good info guys.

I don’t think the video and wifi capibilities are a must. She is definately not a technology junkie.

I like the idea of the Zune. Something compatable with windows will be easier for her to get the hang of.

Anyone else have expierence with the Zune or a similar MP3 player?

Does anyone have any of the Sony products? I’ve always had great luck with my Sony electronics.

I have a 8 GB Zune, wife has a Sandisk Sanza and daughter has an Ipod Shuffle. The Zune, IMO is the better of the three, granted the shuffle doesn’t have much (she is only 6), but song are easy to purchase and load on the Zune, as a matter of fact I have purchased songs off Itunes and they load on the Zune with no problems at all. Ipods are also a great product.

Based on your description you want either an iPod Nano or Classic. It just depends on how much music she wants to store on it.

It is NOT difficult to use with a windows pc. In fact it is very easy. Using iTunes you can easily buy songs from the iTunes store or copy them from her CD collection.

That plus the ability to automatically download podcasts are very nice. Darn near every radio show has a podcast version. Many entertainers and news sources do as well. There is a whole lot of good freebies that she can listen to.
