Flasher Decision

Have the opportunity to offload my Vexilar FL-18 to a family member. I have used it for three seasons of ice fishing and two seasons on the bow of a boat. Have the Ultra-Pack with the Blue Fabric Case, along with the open water gimble mount and trolling motor mount puck. Can’t remember what I paid for it.

    ???’s

    1. What is a Fair Price for the unit?
    2. Is it worth upgrading to a newer Marcum?
    3. What model Marcum do I need to be upgraded from my Vexilar.
    4. Should I just keep it as I won’t be happy upgrading to a Marcum?

Before selling it, ask yourself what you want from a flasher and what you need. Does your current unit have what you want? Does the Marcum you have in mind have the features you want? Does what you have do what you need? I would highly consider these questions before unloading a good chunk of change on something you may not need. I did this last year and mainly regret doing it. If you think that your unit is causing you to miss fish, switch. Otherwise, hold onto the money. I would.

Nic, I’m in the same boat as you. I’ve been running the Vexilar FL18’s for about 4-5years as well and I’m switching to the Marcum LX5’s.

1)I think $300-350 would be a fair price for your Vex. With all your extras $350 certainly wouldn’t be out of line.

2)I haven’t talked to one person that has switched from a Vex to Marcum and regrets it.

3)As for what model to switch to? That’s up to you, but on paper the LX1 will do anything your FL18 will do. I guess if I was you and wanted to upgrade I’d go with the LX3 or LX5.

4)I don’t think anyone would say yes to this. Vex makes a good unit, but I just can’t ignore the facts any longer. Marcum seems to have the better unit hands down, but I’ll be able to give a firsthand comparison soon enough. By the looks of the 10 day forecast will be on the ice shortly

Maybe you could borrow a MarCum from a buddy so you could kick the tires so to speak? That would be the best way to know for certain which direction is the right choice for you.

Wish I had a buddy that had one. Need to find one of those Marcum events close to home. Was the first in my group to get a Vexilar, now they all have the Vex’s. If I do get rid of mine will be interesting to show up with a Marcum. Anyone want to borrow me their’s for the winter?

If you havent already… visit marcumtech.com and just read the features that the different units have and compare to your fl-18. An fl-18 is basically equivalent to a VX-1, then you gain features as you move up to the lx-3 and lx-5. Maybe you will see somebody who has one on the ice you can check out.

I can’t lend one out for the winter but I’d sure let any IDO’er borrow one for the weekend or day if you’d like to try one out before you purchase.

A buddey got his LX-5 when they first came out, came over to my shack with it to show it off a little, 5 minutes after seeing his I was calling buddys looking for someone to buy my FL-18. The next weekend I had a LX-5 and now own 2 and couldn’t be happier.

Anyone fishing down in the Iowa Great Lakes are more than welcome to test mine out if they want to compaire.
