I am looking at getting a Cabela’s hub shelter. I don’t plan on moving alot and have young kids with most of the time. I am looking for something other than my perm. house so we can try other areas easier and yet keep people out of the weather.

If you have kids (depending on their age) you may want to consider a shelter with a floor. The hub style shelters have no floor and with the heater going equals a pool of water inside the shelter and that pool of water really makes the ice underneath VERY slippery. Clam has 2 Hub style shacks with floors, I have my eye on the 6X8 style Clam hub

November 28, 2009 at 5:39 am #818835I agree on the slippery floor problem.Someone always took a spill on the ice at least once a season inside mine,The only other option was a piece of carpet or something extra to lug around and that gets old fast also.Go with the floor if its in the budget.
November 28, 2009 at 5:57 am #818838I don’t think the floor is in the budget this year. My girls are 7 and 10, but they tend to be good while we are fishing. But things happen even to use big kids. How bad do they flap in the wind?
November 28, 2009 at 6:01 am #818839Assuming (i apologize if i am wrong) you are in the smae boat we were in last year want the size but don’t want to spend the money, we got the clam command post, 6×12 for around 400 bucks. We have fished 6 people, kinda tight with all the gear, but very roomy especially for the money. As for the ice melting, it was usually 3-4 guys fishing in it, and if we kept the heater high enough to keep us comfortable with our jackets on we didn’t have much of a problem with the melting, if we cranked the heater up yeah there was lots of melting. We found that the actual set up and tear down was very quick and easy to do in lite to no wind situations. Anchoring the shack was pretty well a given, and that was probably the biggest downfall of the unit. It took so long to take anchors out and re set if you moved, that it made it a pain to do. We are toying with a couple different ideas to modify it by making our own floor. Some of the clam pop ups now have floors that you can get, and it looks like the cabelas pop ups are the same size if i remember right. If you have 2 “adult” sets of hands it is not to bad to set up and anchor, we did it on some pretty windy days, but we also used the 4 wheeler or truck to tie a couple anchor lines to to help us out, and it isn’t that bad if you plan on staying put most of the day. Just saw the wind question… Once anchored and if you anchor the sides out on the windy side it doesn’t flap to bad unless you are talking 20 plus winds, then it can get a little annoying.
November 28, 2009 at 6:19 am #818840Most of the time I’ld have a second or third set of adult hands since my old man has a team wild flip hse. I noticed that the clam and cabela’s (basically the samething) have the option of the floor so I figure down the road it will probably an add on. I had a shoremaster that I picked up but I hated all the poles and holes that would open up and fill with snow. It was also awfully slippery on first ice and slippery on the inside. Thanks for the advice from a beginner on this site.
