When I was at Everts about a month ago Dean was after me to start posting so this is my first post on IDO and I have a couple questions for you Dean.

After watching John Gillespie’s Wisconsin Water & Woods I noticed that you were the official Johnsonville Brat tester for the show, my questions are:

How were the brats and are you giving up cookies now?

Also wanted to let you know we enjoyed our time on Pool 4 and our stay at Everts

I should be on the river, but my wife’s sister is here from Colorado, so I was able to see the show. If they fished all day long, is 30 fish a good day up there? Don’t get me wrong, I’d take a 30 fish day… Thank god, BK didn’t walk past the camera while Dean was eating his brat!

We watched the show down here at the resort. Those ringworms sure put the Gulp to shame

Dean sure looked man pretty and seemed to really enjoy holding that “Johnson”ville

All about camera angle. Did you notice how it made the brat look above average?

    Hey Bob S.

If John Gillespie would ever stop talking he might be able to catch a fish…

Man is that guy hard to listen to!

This old man never moves as fast as when he needs to find the remote to turn the channel when that show comes on.

As far as entertainment value, IMO W&W is the best show out there right now. They might not teach you the ABC’s, but sometimes you just want to watch a couple guys catch some fish and be out there having a good time with out certain products constantly being force fed. I think John does a good job of keeping the “selling” to a minimum, yet keeping his sponsors happy.
I had to turn off the infomercial that followed W&W today.

At least they didn’t need to use the Frabill net today!

It does get hard to listen to sometimes, but I sure do enjoy the current action that the show bring to television.

    Russell,

I do agree with the current action report. It is timely and up to date.

I’m surprised Frabill still sponsors the show. I think he has forgotten to put the “Frabill” in the boat more then he has remembered.

I never would have believed it if I hadn’t seen it.

Dean Marshall with Gillespie’s Johnsonville in his mouth.

Nice show Brett!! Do you have any words of wisdom for other ringworm pitchers that are having trouble catching fish?

The show was a great time with John as always he is alot of fun to fish with and he took it well. He really does put alot of effort into his shows and what you see is what it was, much like reality real time fishing. As for the bite that day in John`s defense was pretty finicky and not alot of the big thump hits that I love with plastics as it was more subtle little flicks on the bait. My advice for casting plastics would be most days less does more(as for woking the jig) and that is what alot of people struggle with when casting plastics like Kalins and ringworms. The natural instinct for most guys that fish alot is they want to move or pop the jig to much. John had just been on a jig casting bite that had him popping jigs to get bites and that mind set was stuck. Most times I explain it as a fine line between getting bit or snagged and you have to be able to visualize what that jig and line are doing. It is all about a jig-plastic combo weight ratio to get proper fall and distance from the bottom. It sounds easy, throw the bait towards the bank or current seem and let it fall and sweep just off the bottom and let the current work the bait. The minute it touches the bottom pick it right back up so it is constantly falling and sweeping. Some days are way easier then others, but days like Monday there is no grace period when you get bit you have to slam it home immediately or you will come up empty. It takes alot of patience and confidence which was something John was having trouble with as do alot of people I fish with when casting. My hats off to guys like Dustin who guide people doing this on a regular basis and I tell him that when we talk about it. This is getting way long I should have just wrote an article about it.I will stress one more time proper jig-plastics weight ratio to get the right fall and sweep which takes time and experience to master. Then lets throw in the variables like current flow, wind, plastics size(which drastically changes fall-sweep rate of the jig) and most off all water depth you are fishing.I could keep rambling my off about this but I will stop at this time as I am confusing myself. One last piece off advice I will give people that are trying to learn this technique would be hi-vis mono line.It is way easier to read when the jig hits the bottom not to mention on days like Monday I see more bites then I feel.Dean turned me on to some yellow Courtland line he has in the bait store that is as good as I have found for this .

Thanks for sharing…the server clock must be off again.

I’m sure there’s some folks that haven’t met Brett in person. One of Mr. Kings personal traits is he’s always willing to share from his 1000’s of hours on the water. Very approachable and friendly guy would be an understatement.

Not only has the above earned him high rankings with the professional angers, but with the sports angler too.

Hopefully we’ll see you soon back down at Evertsville.

Great tips Brett, and good show.

We’ve been putting a lot of those things you mentioned to good work over here on the MN river. Thanks for the tips! It’s amazing how much just a subtle little change in plastic or jig size can make a difference.

I’m going to be switching to the Hi-Vis line too like you mentioned. It seems like I’m always struggling to clearly see my smoke colored braid on cloudy days. When it’s brighter out, I seem to be able to read my line better and catch more fish.

Thanks for the kind words guys I appreciate it even from BK .dtro I think what you will notice with the mono versus the braid is a very tele-graphed dip in the line the instant the jig hits the bottom so you know exactly when to pick it back up.It`s not that you can`t throw braids as I have buddies that do and I do as well in non-current scenarios such as lakes. It just seeems I can stay out of the snags much better with mono on the rivers as my jigs does not have as much time on the bottom to be swept by the current to the first hungry jig eating bottom structure. Please give it ago and let me know what you think.

Brett, that show reminded me of the whipping that Scottie T. and I usually put on you.

I really enjoyed the show and your tips Brett, I don’t know of another fishing show that is consistently filmed the week it aired with top notch area guides giving us great tips Yea, Johns pretty chatty but I’m sure dead air time is not acceptable for the productions and he sure makes sure that don’t happen.

Brett to you change line sizes as well as jig weight or just stick with one and work around that line size.

Nord I guess I will be seeing you and Scott this Sat. fot the T-Combo .Oh wait you guys are probably busy I am sure .

Woody I typically just use the 8lb Cortland line that Dean has in the bait store but you can also change your jig fall rate with different diameter lines for sure.Casting plastics is very hard on line for sure especially as it gets really cold and your guides ice up adding a nice little twist to your line.Stren Hi-vis gold also works pretty well if you can find that as well. One thing to watch with the line in the cold is the more you snag and break off the more the line gets shocked and becomes brittle loosing alot of it`s break strength.

I missed the show. Googled “Wisconsin Water & Woods Show” to see if I could find it on the net. No show, but this post topped the list!

BTW, I like the show. John is a little over the top, but that’s his gig. Its original and most times fun to watch.

Well I was out this weekend chasing whitetails,so I am late to this party.Great job on a tough bite day Brett. The show reminds me of when I get asked,”how’s the bite” ? I guess it really does depend on your perception and or expectations. Brett has 29 fish,John has one,and they are in the same boat fishing the same fish.No matter how experienced a fisherman you may be,that has happened to all of us.Nice job with the show Brett, and BTW,those brats were pretty darn good!

Brett monopolized the front of the boat and kept Jon off the fish that were tight to that slower water….well played!

I used to play that trick w/ Jon J long lining Pool 2, then he showed up w/ 10′ rods and fished right on top of my line w/ his rod right over my head. We dont fish anymore.
