My daughter has Winona State as first on her list of schools she’s interested in. Just curious if anyone around here has gone there, or anyone has had kids go there. From what I’ve been told, and from what I’ve researched, it looks like a pretty good school. Figured there has to be some people around here that have the scoop. There usually is.

    Thanks.

I go to winona state right now actually. I’m vice president of the new fishing club we are starting so we can fish FLW College fishing But, yeah I think its a good school. Big nursing program and lots of other stuff. They are in the process of building a big wellness/fitness center on campus right now and also new dorms. Have any specific questions and I can try to answer them.

I’m not really looking for anything specific, mostly just general stuff. Good campus life? Do you get enough contact with your profs if you need it? Plenty of stuff going on outside classes to keep you interested (besides hunting and fishing)?

it depends upon what she wants to go into. I would also suggest UW-LaCrosse. but she needs really REALLY Good grades to get into LaCrosse right now.. La Crosse is the next toughest school to get into besides Madison.. one of the toughest in the midwest right now..

She is looking at pre-veterinary medecine or environmental science. She changes her mind relatively frequently. Six months ago, it was engineering. From what she has researched, and what her guidance counselor told her, Winona is good for both pre-vet and environmental science. A rep from Winona was at her school and talking to them bumped Winona ahead of Platteville.

…I don’t know about the midwest… MSOE, Marquette, U of M(61), University of Chicago(#8), Northwestern(#14 in US), Notre Dame(#20), U of I(#39), U of W(#39 tied)…long list. I think it is getting pretty competitive for most schools now. For the record…La Crosse is a good school also.

I went to Winona State. Good school. Small campus. Don’t get lost in the crowds compared to the larger schools. Lots of $$$ being invested in the university right now. I don’t know if your daughter has decided on a major. If so, see if it is a strong point for the university. What are her other options available at this time? Big campus vs. small campus is a big thing to some people. Winona has done a great job closing off the core part of the campus to vehicle traffic. Everything is within a flew blocks of walking. No need for a car or even a bike for that matter. I would be fine with sending my kids there if they chose to.

Outside of the classroom there are many positives also. The sports programs have done very well. Football and basketball always draw a big crowd. Nothing like Madison, but fun none the less. There are two lakes within 5 blocks of campus that have biking/running trails around them. There are bluffs that they can have some fun on. I think there are a bunch of intramurals that she could participate in. The bars are always a good time…when she is 21. And the best part…when you come to visit for the weekend, you can look one of us up and hit the river for a quick little r&r for yourself…soft or hard water…

I graduated in ’99 from WSU. I thought it was a very good experience. Great town and plenty of things to do outside of school. When I went class sizes were fairly small (not sure if that’s still the same) and you had easy access to your professors if you needed it. Like previously mentioned, they have invested a ton of money in the campus in the last ten years, and I think it compares very favorably with any public school in the country that is similar in size.

We are going through the same questions about WSU. Our oldest daughter is pretty much set on going there next fall. She is planning on the nursing program there.

It will be weird for us next fall. As the daughter will be entering college, I will be graduating from WTC

I know a certain Netman who went there… Of course I don’t think he graduated what with all the loose women and free beer available there. Most of my mates got bounced once or twice before graduating where ever they tried first.

You could drop by and visit her often on the way to and from pool 4.

WSU is a well respected school, and Winona is for the most part a nice little river town. Probably kind of quiet compared to the Madison area, but the Twin Cities are close enough for concerts etc.

Most of the profs are friendly and approachable, and I even dated one of my instructors for a while… And NO, that had nothing to do with me getting an “A” in her class! We didn’t date until AFTER I completed her course.

    Why not Bucky????

The UW is my alma matter – great school and great tradition/atmosphere. Just about any major she wants to switch to as well. Or is that too close to home?

(I also went to EC for two years and loved it up here!!)

Plus, you get to jump around every 3rd quarter.

Is she considering pharmacy at all??

this is the last statement I will make on the subject. US News and world report just posted that UW-LaCrosse is the 3rd best Midwest PUBLIC SCHOOL..

    Whittsend,

too close to home, too expensive, and too big of a school for her. She wants something smaller.

She wants to do something where she can be outdoors, so pharmacy has never been a thought for her. She had considered going to be a game warden, but she’s 5’2″ and if she had to arrest a poacher, she isn’t too intimidating.

She’s wanted to be a horse vet since she was about 7, so I expect she will start in pre-vet.

I’ll be happy if she just gets through school without changing her major to fast food science. She’s not the most motivated student.

I second this motion… I did both my undergrad and grad work there. And if she’s interested in some area of environmental science or other science degree UW-lax would be a natural fit. They have a VERY accomplished science department. Also look into tuition costs. If she stays in state tuition costs will be considerably lower. I think I heard that the sconnie-sota tuition reciprocity will not be continued. I beleive that at Lacrosse you’d be looking at 2-3K a semester (my wifes a wisc resident and her school loans were less than 20K) compared to non-resident (like me) which was 6-8K semester. Good luck.

BTW, Maybe things have changed, but I think that UW-Lax is still harder to get into than UW-Madison. It’s been consistantly rated as one of the best schools in the midwest.

All the UW schools are good, but they are not even in the same ballpark as Madison. I’m not sure where you got you info from, but La Crosse isn’t even close to the admissions standards at Madison. Madison is a top 25 hardest school to get into. I know La Crosse has some of the highest admissions to their PT program, but not to get into the U itself(it is actually pretty easy to get in).

Mendota, keep your daughter out of MN if you want her to get a good education.

Come on G, Liberal Arts schools barely qualify as higher education, unless you are teaching tree hugging or how to wear Birkenstocks.

I’m pretty sure they have that class at Madison, too. Its a good thing I drank heavily when I went to school there…

Unfortunatley many people agree with you. Heck you should go to a school that teaches you how to “do something”, not to one that teaches you to analyze, think, and make up your own mind….
