I just got off the phone with Dave Markquart, owner of Skeeter Boat Center. He was awful darn excited as we talked. Here’s why…
The new Yamaha SHO 4 stroke motors use modern materials and new engine building technology to make some dramatic improvements to their line.
The new SHO produces power with a new 4.2 liter block. In the 250 hp class the new SHO is 39# lighter than the comparable 250 HPDI two stroke!
All motors will be naturally aspirated… no turbo charging or super charging of the air fuel mixture is needed to produce these performance gains.
In side by side comparisons the SHO was 1.5 – 2 MPH faster than the exact same boat powered by a 250 two stroke.
Hole shot on the SHO was 14% quicker. It was at this point in the conversation where Dave stated “the video doesn’t lie!”
The new SHO also improves on fuel economy as well by registering a 12% improvement during testing.
When comparing the new SHO 250 (20″ transom motor) to the current design 225 F 4 stroke the SHO is 81# lighter. More power, a LOT less weight!
Yamaha’s 300 HP 8 cylinder engine has been replaced with a 300 HP 6 cylinder SHO with a 249# reduction in weight. This makes the new 300 HP motors a viable and very attractive option for those running big water boats like the Skeeter WX2100 with the 300 HP rating. In the past the 300 HP – 8 cylinder simply weighed too much for serious consideration… that’s not the case any more.
Availability of the 20″ transom (bass boat motors) is scheduled for Jan. 10, 2010. The new SHO motors in the 25″ transom models (walleye boat motors) are scheduled for release April 10, 2010. My understanding is Yamaha will be making major press releases on these new motors this coming week so stay tuned for additional information to follow as it becomes available.
