Yamaha’s new motors!

I just got off the phone with Dave Markquart, owner of Skeeter Boat Center. He was awful darn excited as we talked. Here’s why…

The new Yamaha SHO 4 stroke motors use modern materials and new engine building technology to make some dramatic improvements to their line.

The new SHO produces power with a new 4.2 liter block. In the 250 hp class the new SHO is 39# lighter than the comparable 250 HPDI two stroke!

All motors will be naturally aspirated… no turbo charging or super charging of the air fuel mixture is needed to produce these performance gains.

In side by side comparisons the SHO was 1.5 – 2 MPH faster than the exact same boat powered by a 250 two stroke.

Hole shot on the SHO was 14% quicker. It was at this point in the conversation where Dave stated “the video doesn’t lie!”

The new SHO also improves on fuel economy as well by registering a 12% improvement during testing.

When comparing the new SHO 250 (20″ transom motor) to the current design 225 F 4 stroke the SHO is 81# lighter. More power, a LOT less weight!

Yamaha’s 300 HP 8 cylinder engine has been replaced with a 300 HP 6 cylinder SHO with a 249# reduction in weight. This makes the new 300 HP motors a viable and very attractive option for those running big water boats like the Skeeter WX2100 with the 300 HP rating. In the past the 300 HP – 8 cylinder simply weighed too much for serious consideration… that’s not the case any more.

Availability of the 20″ transom (bass boat motors) is scheduled for Jan. 10, 2010. The new SHO motors in the 25″ transom models (walleye boat motors) are scheduled for release April 10, 2010. My understanding is Yamaha will be making major press releases on these new motors this coming week so stay tuned for additional information to follow as it becomes available.

So is this technology going to eventually trickle down to the mid range 4 strokes?

I’ve not heard anything concrete on any plans for the smaller motors but I’m sure that is a safe bet.

I was told to expect these motors from the 250-175 hp range not only in the 20 inch transom, but also in the 25 inch transom. The Yamaha rep was really excited.

Yup, the 25″ motors look to be out on April 10. Yamaha’s never had a 175 4 -stroker so that will be a nice addition to the lineup.

How cool would one of the 300’s be on a WX2100?

THAT… is a sharp looking motor.

Moreyes you swiping stuff from BBC? Saw that pic a few minutes ago. I would hope the gamechanger would at least have some better graphics on the motor…

I’ve been following the hype. Looks like Skeeter also has a new bass boat model coming for 2010, the FX, just saw some pictures of a 20ft model. Looks like a cross between my ZX and and i-Class.

Should be interesting to watch what will happen with these motors. Dave and Dan better get a demo ready to roll at the Skeeter Boat Center. Hopefully they have one to take a look at by the time I pick mine up again in spring.

If I were to compair the 150 Yamaha 4 stroke to a 150 two stroke I would say they are really close in performance. At this point I would choose the 4 stroke over the 2 stroke. With the weight down on the big blocks and the performance up, the 4 stroke is a winner in my book.

    KK,
Before it got pulled, the posting on THT talked about a new F70, much lighter than the current 4-stroke offerings.

While I take side by side comparisons with a grain of salt as there’s to many varibles I think, I do like the idea of a lighter 4 stroke motor.

If they come out with a 175 that’s not only lighter, but more HP than my F150, I see a motor swap in the near future.

You can’t spend to much on fishing….right?

That right Greg!! Can’t wait to see/hear/play with a boat that has one of these hanging on the back!
