Has anyone tryed a wireless backup camera on there truck. I was looking at the wireless type. I see on EBAY there are alot of brands out there and price ranges. Do they work at night? Does anyone have any insight on any brand name they have had good luck with.

We install quite a few at my job on motorhomes(not wireless)but they did not show much at all when dark out unless there was light in the area of the rear of the vehicle , some motorhomes we install backup lights so they can see what behind them in the camera.

I bought a VR3 wireless backup camera at Wal-Mart for about $100 (if I remember right). Works great. One of the better puchases I’ve made. I can put the ball right under the coupler. License plate lights provide enough light at night for me to see.

It is difficult to see at night without an outside light source. Having said that, I was looking for a rear mount camera to watch my boat when pulling it behind the 5th wheel. The RV places wanted $300-600 for a system. Bought a backup camera for $35 at a Checker parts store. It is wireless and would not send a signal from the back of the 5th wheel. We ran a wire with the sending unit to the front of the 5th wheel and it has worked great ever since. $35 and the pic is in color. Very reliable. Hard to beat.

It’s the one feature I really wish I had gotten when I bought last time!!!

northstar, does that include the monitor too? Was there a place to plug in a video cable on the camera?

I’ve been wanting to get something for my RV/boat combo. I have a tough time changing lanes, and judging the distance when towing.

The monitor is in color and is included. Plugs into the cigarette lighter. You also have to have a power source at the camera but you could do that from the trailer wiring. Camera is mounted so you either have to mount it on something you can move around if it isn’t going to be stationary or have it in one place. The image is very narrow and fades to miniature very quickly so I’m not sure how good it is for judging distance. I would say not very good. You can tell if anyone is back there however and that is a great help. I simply monitor the boat because I cannot see it at all behind the 5th wheel unless I’m going around a corner or sharp curve. I used to try to watch for the shadow as if that is going to tell you when you have a flat tire. Works great. The camera to video is wireless. If this doesn’t answer it, just post again and we will work it out. Maybe tomorrow I can take some pics for you. I’ll try to see what the brand is.

No, that helps northstar. Good review. Something is better than what I have now. I’ll check it out.

    Thanks.
