Just getting ready to hook up the boat to head to The Pond and this is what I found . The cracks are on both sides of both bolts. Any ideas on what caused this? What happens when it cracks all the way through?

Looks like I will be watching football after all .

Drain the oil in a pan and see if there’s water in with the oil.

Yeah kind of appears there was water in the lower unit, froze and cracked the case.

I was afraid of that. What can I expect the repair bill to run? The motor is a Honda 90 h.p. 4 stroke.

Hard to say until you know the full extent of the damage. Worst case scenario would be a new lower unit.

Looks more like a bent prop shaft or possibly a bad bearing causeing the problem.Spin the prop does it wobble?

I was being serious. If you don’t drain it and it freezes again, more damage or if there isn’t any water, you know to look for the other problem.

Im not sold on water in the LU…

To me it looks like the flange over that covers the prop is broken. Which i would think would be caused by the prop being deflected after striking something.

The current prop has no damage noticable in the pic.

Maybe loaned the boat to a buddy? they put a new prop on it. Not really sure.

It just looks odd that it is the flange that is broken on both sides of the mount that has the bolt. but deffinatley check for water, cant rule it out but the damage looks odd.

After looking at the pic again, It looks like the prop and shaft were pushed outward causing the tears in the flanges…has it been that cold to freeze that hard???

I keep coming back to this post to look at those pics. It looks like the prop was pushed/ pulled rearwards away from the lower unit case which caused that metal ring around the prop to break at the mounts where the bolts go into the lower unit housing. Now how that happened without any visible damage to the prop or lower unit is beyond me.

Thanks for the input everyone. I hope to get it in somewhere today to have it looked at. I will let you know what they find.

I didn’t loan the boat to anyone, and that is the original prop. Until 3-4 weeks ago, the boat was sitting in northern MN and there were some pretty cold nights. I remember hitting a rock early this fall, but at very low speed.

I hit a rock at about 2 mph and tore the out of my stainless prop. Doesn’t need to be a high speed collision to cause a surprising amount of damage.

Dang! That sucks. Looks spendy. Don’t feel too bad though. When my dad got his new 24ft Larson I pulled it out of the water for his 24hr check up at the deal and when I was doing the walk around on the trail before I left I knoticedd he ripped off the skeg at some point in the first 24 hours of use. That man can’t keep anything new

The initial report doesn’t sound good . If I understood the repair guy correctly, there was a seal already broken before the water in the lower unit froze, causing the drive shaft to freeze. He said the bearings had basically welded to the drive shaft . Still pricing out parts, but it sounds like we’re looking at $1625 – $2500 .

Its probably wishful thinking, but any chance insurance would cover this type of damage?

Hit a rock at a idle and did almost $700 worth of damage on the F150 yammie, evidently don’t take much.

Insurance covered all but the $100 deductible, if you have insurance, might want to check.

    Good luck on it.

Absolutely an insurance claim – had my first one last year (ever) was for a bent prop shaft and insurance covered everything except the deductable

Good luck and what a way to ruin your day and trip

Thanks for the link. I’ll see what my mechanic thinks. Will also place a call to my insurance agent tomorrow.

    Appreciate everybody’s help!
