Booked a trip to Cozumel in Jan. and was wondering if anyone has done and fishing down that way? Is bottom fishing or deep sea the way to go? It would only be me fishing so can I get on a boat with another group? Thanks.

I have fished out of Cancun several times. You can share charters down there. Not a bad deal but do some research first.
I caught barracuda, jack crevalle and grouper.October 28, 2009 at 3:35 am #812138Been there, done that. My wife and 2 sons and I went to Cozumel as a stop on a cruise ship in 2008. We’d been there before and decided we’d like to spend time fishing instead of shopping/sightseeing again. I got on line and found these guys: http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1467771033&ref=name#/treshermanos.cozumelfishing?ref=sgm
What a great time. Excellent charter! Great price, good guys, and they put us on fish. My oldest soon caught a 15lb Black Fin Tuna. We chose to troll but we could have cast spinning gear on the bay flats on the East shore. We fished 1/2 a day then they took us snorkeling in the clearest water I’ve ever been in.
Call Oscar – he’ll take care of you.
Bring back mas tequila!Via con Dios!
October 28, 2009 at 11:42 am #812151GO TO PLAY DEL CARMEN, JUST ACROSS THE BAY, EVERY YEAR. I USE A LOCAL GUIDE FROM THERE. HE’S ALLWAYS ON THE FISH. DEPENDING ON THE TIME OF YEAR CHANGES WHAT TYPE OF FISH ARE BITING. I’VE CAUGHT CUDA,RED SNAPPER, YELLOWFIN TUNA, BLUE RUNNERS, AMBERJACK,BULL DOLFIN,MARLIN AND SAILFISH LIKE THIS DANDY MY WIFE CAUGHT LAST MARCH. THE FERRY COMES INTO PLAYA FROM COSMEL JUST DOWN THE BEACH FROM CAPT EDDIES LOCATION. IF YOUR INTERESTED EMAIL ME FOR PHONE# AND EMAIL ADDRESS.
October 28, 2009 at 12:36 pm #812158January is a slow time of year for fishing down there…. like said, find a reputable charter…. also bring your dramamine (sp?) you will more than likely have to hunt for the fish Also would recommend doing a 1/2 day first, to test the waters so to speak….Have fun

October 28, 2009 at 1:54 pm #812175norseman looks like you had a great guide. I use Eddy too.
Walleye, I went down last January and hammered the fish. We had a great time. Bring dramamine and you should be fine. I did everything I could to hold onto my breakfast and my buddy had to go back after a 1/2 hour of fishing for bait. He fishes a lot and couldn’t handle it. It was a little choppy to say the least Eddy is a great guide though! We only fished for a few hours and brought back more fish than any other boat. We caught AmberJack and we even caught a Black Grouper, very tough fish to catch I guess. Captain Eddy knew how to do it all. He doesn’t have a big fancy boat but it’s safe and he knows what he’s doing
As for eating your catch, Eddy cooked it right on the beach for me. It was the highlight of my trip. All I had to do was pick up a couple cases of beer and it was a party on the beach. Everyone pitched in, great guys! I also took some fish back to my resort and the chef cooked it up for my wife and I. I’ll put up a report from my trip with more detail in a couple weeks when things slow down for me.
You should have a great time!
October 28, 2009 at 2:08 pm #812177Oh by the way these fish fight incredible! Eddy said the Black Grouper is one of the hardest fighting fish and based off my experience I’d have to agree! It fought like nothing else I’ve ever caught. I almost couldn’t reel em in on my own. Eddy put a small fighting belt on me and I thought the fish was going to win! I just barely came out on top A ton of fun!

I too have fished down there, trolling and drinking beer. We caught White Marlin (Sailfish), Dolphin, and Mahi Mahi. As far as cooking it, speak to the hotel or resort you are staying at. Many of them will prepare your fish for you. The usually garnish it really nicely and serve it on a huge platter. You can then share it with your family and the many friends you will make there. Tips can get you nearly anything down there.October 28, 2009 at 5:57 pm #812279Went fishing down in Cozumel about 5 years ago. Was down there In Jan. Fishing was slower. 4 people on the boat and while trolling landed 3 barracuda. Since the trolling bite was slow they took us to a reef for a little jigging. Boy did the action pick up then. I hooked up with what they were guessing was a 75 lb King Mackrel. Unfortunately though 3 poor attempt to gaff the fish , and the 4th time hit the line, and cut it.
good time. Fishing will be slower, but they will bust thier butt to put fish in the boat
