Plugs are fine. Fuel pump and carb are getting gas. Gas is fresh and at right ratio. Bulb is hard. Tank vent is open.

It is an early 70’s – late 60’s model. It will start and idle fine for appx 8-10 seconds and then die abruptly. I can start it and put in gear, take off at high speed, and it would do the same – die abruptly after about 10 seconds. Father-in-law says it is the carburetor and possibly the float.

The carb is my best guess as well. Take it apart and clean it. Make sure you know how to before you start or find someone who does.
Oh yeah, dont let anyone tell you seafoam or anyother addative either. I know ill catch he77 for that statment but it is the defference between a proper fix and a possible or temporary fix.

Check the gasket on the fuel filter. It’s a small square plastic “doohicky” with a screw in the middle on the side of the engine I had a 9.9 that did the same thing. It was getting air at that point.

Ill thrice it and say that if it quits after a short while it usually means that the bowl isn’t filling fast enough. An orifice between the filter/tank and the bowl feed is gunked. If parts dirty everything else will be to

On old unmaintained outboards the float can lose its bouyency and refuse to fill. Rebuild kit with float and a good soak followed by a clean should solve ur problem.

Its a semi complicated job with alot of small pieces that tend to fly. Have the neighborhood wrench reman it for a case of beer.

    Good luck

Do you have to pump the bulb to restart the motor? My first guess if that is what you have to do is a weak fuel pump.

Edited to add….. If it keeps running while pumping the bulb FUEL PUMP.

Another thing to look at…check the seal/gasket on the tank. I had a 15 Evy for almost 20 years and it sat outside a lot…had to replace the tank gasket 3 times.

Tom P. – nope, pumping the bulb did not help keep it going.

I believe I got my answer.

    Thanks everyone/IDO.
