Big screen TV trouble.

I’m wondering how common problems are with newer big screens?

I have a Hitachi rear projection LCD that is on its 4th problem. 2 light bulbs, and now the 2nd optical block is going. This tv was one of the better rated ones too (CR). I am thankful that I had an extended warranty from Circuit City.

Anyone have this much trouble? Plasma, DLP…do they have problems too?

My understanding is that all TV’s in the “early” big screen era do tend to have more problems than LCD TV’s. DLP and projection tv’s have issues with parts and bulbs burning out, Plasmas have elements that have as little as a 1000 hour life rating. LCD TV’s are tough to beat. We found a 47 inch Philips 1080P 120hz tv for under 900 at target about 3 months ago. A little price to pay for crystal clear picture watching favre toss the TD’s, and the confidence in knowing there are practically ZERO parts with a hour rating on them.

    Best of luck to you

I find it amazing that you pay these big bucks for tv’s that last a year or less. My CRT tv is close to 15 years old, I guess, and its as strong as ever..

and the picture is 720 HD.. because that ‘s how it came from the factory.. and all it took was Directv HD’s box to make it really shine..

I have heard of close to half the guys buying a “hd” tv that have had problems with them.. bulbs burning out is the biggest one.. that’s nuts for the price that you are paying.

    COMPLETELY NUTS..

What is nuts is the price of the part they are putting in…$700. And that is the second one! (not including the 2 bulbs). I paid $8-900 for it new a little over 2 years ago.

If it goes out a 3rd time, maybe there is a lemon law that would help me out?

I would recommend an extended warranty on any TV purchase these days.

BTW, the repair company doing the service has been great to work with: Television Service Labs out of Eagan. (I have no connection with them).
