Thinking about taking a fishing trip up to the Lansing iowa area this fall. any tips on good spots, baits, and time to go would be great.. Primarily targeting smallmouth, and we are 100% catch and release.

You might try posting this in the Mississippi bass forum. 
Your best bet may be backwaters as they stay warmer than the main channel. I’m sure they are all starting to congrgate in certain areas in preparation for winter. I would target the backwaters with tubes and worms, possibly top waters also. I’m a walleye guy (some claim i’m the carp king though…. 
So as far as in depth info on Smallies, can’t really help you on specific locations.)
A very good option though for smallies are some of the smaller interior rivers in that area… They hold some AMAZING smallie opportunities.
