I can’t catch big fish all that often, although it seems I can grow pumpkins bigger than my PB fishys. This weekend Red Wing, MN will host a nationally sanctioned weighoff on Sat down by the river, I’ll be the guy with a big pumpkin AND a cat fish pole. Oct 10th the second weighoff will be at Stillwater, MN. These events are a bunch of fun, great for family, and good shore fishing to boot! Expect to see numerous pumpkins over 1000 lbs, say hi if you come by, I’ll be in the Titan with CZ on the bumper.

How does one go about transporting a 1000 lb pumpkin?
I’d guess transporting a 1000 lb pumpkin is less dangerous than lifting a 1000 lb pumpkin.

Very carefully! Seriously, skid steer comes in handy, other wise guys make lifts. Smaller ones can get tarped. They all go on pallets and get strapped down, then the forklift at the event takes over.
Mine are not that big.
September 24, 2009 at 10:19 pm #806374Where are you located? I have a little contest with some neighbors, he who has the biggest jack-o-lantern gets the on Halloween
Those should get me free beer all daydeertrackerPosts: 9163September 24, 2009 at 11:41 pm #806379Is there a certain breed of pumpkin that makes them get that big, or is it just years of experience? We are starting a garden next year and the kids would like that.
DTSeptember 25, 2009 at 12:27 am #806382They are special seeds, I know that some giant growers will send a few seed to those that ask.
You can find them on-line also.
I heard that you should start them inside and then move them outside after there is no chance of freezing. You need a ton of water for them and yes years of experience helps
I am planning on planting a few next year.September 25, 2009 at 4:50 am #806424They are what we call ‘AGs’, meaning Atlantic Giants. The original seeds came from a guy named Howard Dill many many years ago. Howard died a year or more ago, he believed in big giant pumpkins, orange with big ribs, round, orange. So at most weighoffs in the US, there is a ‘Dill’ award for the prettiest punk in town, size does not matter. So this Sat, we’ll be weighing punks over 1500lbs in Red Wing at Levee Park, and hopefully a pretty one here. Seeds for you? Just ask. Warning….it is much worse than cat fishing just so you know.
whittsendPosts: 2389September 25, 2009 at 7:57 pm #806531Have any quick and dirty tips for getting them to grow so bit?? I assume, water, weeding, and only one fruit per plant? Anthing else?
My 18′ sunflowers got nothing on those things.
Way cool!
September 25, 2009 at 9:54 pm #806550PM me Whit, I can get you started. Did you see what I said about cat fishing?
September 25, 2009 at 9:57 pm #806552Pumpkin moving party tonight, I’m sure there will be some photos posted shortly. Hey Wade, get your you know what over here, will ya?
September 25, 2009 at 10:09 pm #806557SO how heavy are your pumpkins?
Could two of three guys throw one off your deck so that it landed on the trampolineSeptember 25, 2009 at 10:11 pm #806559A few more beers. Thanks for the idea!
And to answer your question, 6 guys at least.
whittsendPosts: 2389September 26, 2009 at 3:54 am #806603Locked and loaded, thanks to the Cottage Grove Fire guys and gals. Come to Red Wing tomorrow! No tramp, I went for a beer in the garage and the fire crew had both loaded before I could take a sip!
September 26, 2009 at 4:10 am #806605And then there’s this sob running down the highway toward Red Wing, yes, that is one pumpkin.
September 27, 2009 at 2:00 am #689040I saw this on the news tonight, A guy from Rochester won. Would sandy soil be good for growing pumpkins or am I thinking of water mellons?
September 27, 2009 at 4:38 pm #782009And to anyone who would ask, “Now what?”… I say, “Pumpkin Boat”.
September 30, 2009 at 12:21 am #542194I’ve been pushing the club for years to do a regatta, if it doesn’t happen next year in the perfect spot in Red Wing I’m not paying dues!
The punks met their final resting spot today, guys bring the FW and kids, good excuse to buy great jerky from my best buddy meat cutter guy Greg in Cottage Grove MN! Tell them Crazy Bob sent ya, you may get a discount, or wait, they may charge you more?
September 30, 2009 at 1:43 am #541019Can’t tell you, the meat shop has a combined weight raffle for a meat pack. You need to go there and guess!
September 30, 2009 at 1:49 am #534405Off the top of my head, 1425 lbs by a guy named Chad Revier, Chad already held the MN state record from last year, missed his own record by 3 lbs. We weighed a 1502 damaged pumpkin by Chris Stevens also, had a leaker there that didn’t qual, stunk worse than BK on a good night. More to come at Stillwater, MN on Oct 10th, lots of guys are keeping secrets in the patch until then.

Please remind us before then. I’d like to venture out for that.
