Truck Brakes

I have a 04′ F150 with ~62000 miles on it and yesterday I heard the squeking of the brakes. I believe it is the front brakes that are going out but am not 100% sure since this happened last night and the ford is so quiet inside…

    My questions are this:
I have replace front brakes on a couple of cars, most recently a ford escort, are changing front brakes the same for the most part on a truck as it is on a car?
I am told that back brakes on cars are pretty tricking to change wiht the emergency brake, is this your experience on truck too?

Any idea on what it would cost to change the front brakes out, assuming i need rotors too? How about the back ones?

I am leaving on a fishing trip on saturday and this is just perfect timing for me…

not likely you will need rear brakes. I haven’t done mine yet (06 150) but on cars that I’ve done with rear discs it isn’t any harder than the front. Replacing the rotors is a judgement call but @ 62K I would guess they are still good. Put ceramic pads on, much nicer and cleaner. Overall not a tough job to do.

I change out the rotors and pads on my K1500 for 170 bucks. The rotors are disposable in my opinion now days. 62k is about right for pads but as mentioned your rotors might be ok.
My back brakes are drums and I won’t mess with them, my next truck will be disc brakes all around.
If you have done the disc brakes on your car you will have no problems with the truck.

I just got done replacing pads on my ’03 Sierra (125k). The rears were the squeeking ones. I put ceramics on both (front and rear) for under $100 in about an hour. Disc’s are 100 x’s easier then drum.

When doing brakes on your own, its important to clean the pad carrier and grease with high temp grease. They also make an aerosal can that you spray on the back of the pads to eliminate sticking and pulls. All bolts and wheel lugs should be torqued to prevent early wear on tires, pads and rotor.
Shops charge around $250 an axle and up, and this is a great way to save money. As for the rear rotors and internal parking brake they are fairly simple.

    04′ f150 18″wheels

    144,496 miles

Ford used ceramic pads on my truck, first set I changed was 120,000 miles. When I did it was because the pads were not equipped with squeelers. WTF So I screwed a rotor, my lathe was out of comission so I went with new lifetime rotors and top grade ceramic from Napa. I wanna say parts were $250 alone.

You probly wont need rotors, buy them anyways you can return them. But I would reccomend NOT using the economy grade pads or you will be changing them a lot sooner. The upgrades are worth it.

120,000 is pretty damn good for brakes and my one rotor I didnt screw up was in good condition, so the other one would have been too I suppose. Yes I did replace both.

Your rear are disc too, but last longer than front due to weight lunging when you break.

Just changed out all 4 pads on my 01 chev,(1/2 ton, x cab, 4×4) 178,000 on original brakes. Rotors were good, no chev rotor rust problem, no pulse. $85 for mid grade ceramic pads. Yes I am easy on brakes, but I was very impressed. They were all ready, one front was hitting the squeaker, but all 4 were wearing very evenly.

    sometimes things go good!!

    2004 F 150 56,000 Orig miles currently…

Rear end locked up at 38,000…they recut the rear rotors and replaced pads (warranteed)

54,200 miles…started getting some serious “pulsing”. The dealer says the rear rotors are now shot and all pads need repl plus recut front rotators… $500 out of my pocket!

54,276 miles…hearing rubbing noise and smelling brakes…dealer says calipers are hanging up and boot pin assmby needs to be replaced…

My return to Ford has NOT been a happy one so far…
BTW my front wheels get black fast, even with the ceramics, I use a wheel cleaner before washing…
