My granddaughter needs one of these for school, anyone have one they want to sell? New ones are out of the kid’s budget for school supplies.

Is this for a High school or college level class?

I know through all of my high school and college level math classes they always had a few that you would be able to ‘borrow’ for the semester. Most of the times you couldn’t leave the classroom with it but they make emulators for the computer that look identical.

I have a TI-85 that I’d gladly part with, but it’s got some demons and only works intermittently, so I don’t think she’d want it. Plus, it’s 12 years old

If she’s planning on going to college, it’s not a bad investment. I bought my TI-85 around 1997 in high school and used it junior and senior year of high school and all 4 years of college. Also, used it at work for several years until it went on the fritz. Now, I have a TI-84 Plus. Seems spendy for a calculator, but it comes in handy a lot. Of course, you can do a lot of that stuff in Excel now, but it’s nice to be able to simply punch things in the calculator, too.

Oh, and a lot of schools have calculators to borrow or rent for the class. I know we could do that in high school, and my dad is a math teacher and they also lend them out.

That’s because they hadn’t been invented yet.

What are you talking about? I loved those classes. I had pre-calc as a Jr in high school. Math and physics. Best classes in high school.

Now, back to why do they need a calculator to learn this stuff when not long ago I had to learn by using a 100 pages of scratch paper to figure out this stuff.

When do you need it by?
I am between houses and believe I packed mines TIs away. i am moving at the end of the month and would be willing to give it up for a minimal charge. (I believe it will need a battery)

    Gotta love Math!

    Let me know,

do a Google search of ” TI-84 Craigslist “, there’s a bunch of them listed. As light as it is, hopefully somebody won’t mind mailing it.

Granddaughter is 15, so it’s high school now, hopefully college later. I’ll check with the daughter-in-law today when I get to Eau Claire, see how fast she needs it. School starts Tues. the 8th for them, not sure how soon they need to have their own. Thanks for the responses.

You need a fancy calculator for the games. I had a TI-86 and “Drug Wars” and “Tetris” got me through plenty of boring high school and college Calculus and physics lessons.

I have one just sitting around collecting dust. Its in good condition too I believe, hardly ever used it. I just finished college so I don’t think I will be needing it much anymore. I will double check where its at tonight and let you know!

I found a support group! I feel your pain. The daughter dropped it on me a week or so ago that she needed that calculator or one similar. I asked how much and it was like $140 or something. They found it on sale at Target for $100 luckily. Still, $100 for a calculator? I might as well have bought her one of those mini-laptops and installed some program that would be the same as that calculator. My daughter is using it for statistics class.

I saw a graphing calculator in Wal-Mart last week for $89.97, FYI.

I realize kids can use calculators in class, but I’m a big believer in learning how to do it without and then use the calculator to speed up the tasks. The reasoning is that you need to be able to tell if the “answer” is reasonable.

I find it strange that your granddaughter would “need” a graphing calculator for any class below Calculus or Pre-Calculus. I made it through Algebra I & II, Geometry, Trigonmetry, and Calculus in high school and Calculus I & II in college without owning one. Did I wish I had one at times? Absolutely, but they aren’t really necessary until you get to Pre-Calc or Calc.

Get the absolute one that the book recommends..

why? because at times the book tells you exactly what buttons to push in the correct order..

so don’t by an “off brand”.. but the one that goes with the class..

trust me at age 45 I was taking a stats class and had the exact same problem.. GET THE CORRECT ONE..

it will save you from buying it twice..

My wife and I totally agree with you! My wife teaches high school math. And she has parts of the test that require the student to answer the questions without a calculator and showing mandatory written work. She too struggles with how much a student “needs” a calculator, but when the colleges are basically expecting students to be very familiar and capable with these tools, she needs to make sure they know how to use them to their fullest potential. It is one thing to have the TI-85, but it a different thing to know how to use it. Unfortunately, I was the first of those two during my time.

+1 on getting the one required. Glad you found one, I was just asking the wife to dig mine out, not sure where it is anyhow.
