Minnkota Genesis Trolling Motor “ISSUES”….

I’ve got a 24v Genesis – 74 lb thrust. Has worked well for 6 years. Last week it just started spinning around on it’s own without any input from me. It is touchy about store/deploy too now. My question: Should I try and have it repaired or just figure I got $200 use per year out of it and go buy a new Terrova? If so, is there any value to anyone in the Genesis?

Has anyone else seen problems with the Genesis with a positive resolution?

I’d call Minn Kota first. As you are probably aware, they had so many problems with this motor originally. Worst case, you take it to a local repair shop for a price quote to fix vs. new.

I had the same train of thought. I spoke to Minnkota directly and they said that I may have a voltage issue from my batteries / possible short in cables. He didn’t seem too committed to that idea though. I will fully charge and test the batteries prior to my next trip and see if that helps.

I know i had this problem in my old power drive and it was in the foot pedal. I bought a new foot pedal for $65 and worked great until i sold it with the boat.

I had the same conversation Minn Kota myself. My power drive foot thrust just quit working or was sporadic. They told me it was a voltage problem or had a short in the motor. I’ve had 3 pedals or so and every time there was a differant problem with the pedal. Once i replaced the pedal it worked perfectly. Hopefully everyhting works out for you, Dan

    Dog2th,

    Have you “reset” the Genesis?

If you need some assistance, let me know.

    Reset???
No. I certainly would appreciate your help. Or could you point me to a website that would have instructions?
Also…. I’ve been told that Minnkota no longer makes the foot pedal. Anybody know where I could find one?
I’ve spent the last 24 hours trying to justify the $1300 it would take to replace the Genesis with a Terrova and I’m beginning to see the light. But when it worked properly, the Genesis IS a fantastic motor.

How do you re-set the motor, mine is stuck in the down position, and I am receiving some errors that I don’t understand.

What error message are you receiving?

To initiate the Emergency Override for Stow/Deploy
    a. Turn Master Switch off.
    b. Simultaneously press and hold Mode Switch and turn the Master Switch on.
    c. Continue to hold Mode Switch until Systems Display shows [Sto] (approx. 15 seconds)
    d. Release Mode Switch
    e. Use the Left/Right Steering Arrows to position the motor to be stowed properly.
    f. Use Trim Up Switch to stow motor.
    g. Press and release Mode Switch to reset the system and turn Master Switch off.

I am thinking there is another process for a reset of the Motor. I will check it out and post back.

I had a love hate relation ship with my Genesis for 4 years until we parted ways. I had this problem one spring also. All I did was take the wires out of the plug, snip them off, strip and rewire. Job complete! I wish that was my only problem. I sure do miss old Genny.

I had a genesis for several years. The first year it worked great the second year it was pretty touchy and in and out of the repair shop. I alway had to take it in and have the board reset. As you know there were a lot of problems with them. They were a great motor and a great concept, but were know for their problems. I don’t know if they still do it, but at one time Minnkota had an upgrade program. It allowed you to trade the motor in through a service center and you were offered a replacement Minnkota of equal or lesser value. I traded mine for the biggest Maxxum they had at the time. They were doing the trades because the motors were no longer in production and I was told they were using them for parts. I don’t know if they still do that, but it might be something to check into.
