ACL/MCL Surgery

I tore my ACL/MCL about 20 years ago. I didn’t have surgery. I just rehabbed it. I went to physical therapy for about 3 months (I think 3 times per week). My guess is your looking at least 6 months before your able to do most of the things you did before. It’ll be a year before your 100%. Since I went the non surgery route, I have had several times that my knee has slipped out. I would guess at some point, I will need to have surgery.
If you were playing for the Vikings or Packers they would put you on IR. On the plus side, you should be feeling good enough to be comfortable walking in the woods by the time the rut picks up this fall.
August 24, 2009 at 2:17 pm #799847It’s a fairly quick recovery considering. I would say 3-6 months to 100% at the longest, possibly quicker. A lot will depend on the surgery and your bodies healing ability. I have had 5 knee surgeries and avg was about 3 month to 100%. Good luck
Did you completely tear them (blow them away) where they need to put in new ones or are they just going to fix them?
August 24, 2009 at 2:19 pm #799848Sorry to hear that Erick. Hope you will be able to get in and out of the boat so you can at least have an enjoyable rehab.

Kinda like when you take me CAT FISHIN’ bk? Good luck E!
…as far as “turn around time”…well, I just won’t go there.
August 24, 2009 at 4:29 pm #799898Well there goes your plans to run that marathon you were planning…
I think Evert’s has a truck and trailer parking service for a nominal fee…you should be OK…As far as the turnaround time, the Ex works in the Physical Therapy unit at Regina in Hastings. She said expect 6-9 months for therapy if you are in great shape! Add broken bones who knows???

So 2-3 months for you E!!
August 24, 2009 at 5:26 pm #799918Just talking about it makes my right knee hurt (blew out my ACL). Tuck is spot on for the recovery, don’t skimp on the P.T.
At least you’ll have a bunch of us buddies willing to take you fishing.
I want to see this wheelbarrel experiment, life jackets might be mandatory.Jeremy

StaleMackrelPosts: 443August 24, 2009 at 6:30 pm #799966Hi, I had ACL, MCL, and PCL surgery back in 1959. The Mayo Clinic did not know how to do PCL surgery then. My repair for the ACL was taken from a technique from John Hopkins. Many things have changed since then. Like it was stone age surgery at that point. I want to commend the Mayo Clinic and my surgeon, since retired, Lowell Peterson. However, to answer your post as far as time is concerned please do not rush it for whatever the time is. Make sure that you do the rehab work very dillegently! Also, do not do anything that they tell you not to do. I have had 5 surgeries on that knee with the last one being knee replacement in 2000. Good luck in your recovery and again do not do what you are supposed to not do. I had two other injuries after the intitial injury so that is what I have experienced. Again, time line, do what the medical people tell you to do. Each body is different. JJ
