Another use for ZIPLOC bags

My oldest daughter told me about this last year but really did not take it serious. My cousin sent me this email today and thought why not give it a try, he included info about it that he pulled up on Google…

    Zip-lock water bags
We went with some friends to Sweety Pies on Sunday for breakfast, and we sat in the enclosed patio section beside the house. We happened to notice a couple of zip lock baggies pinned to a post and a wall. The bags were half filled with water, each contained 4 pennies, and they were zipped shut. Naturally we were curious! Ms Sweety told us that these baggies kept the flies away! So naturally we were even more curious! We actually watched some flies come in the open window, stand around on the window sill, and then fly out again. And there were no flies in the eating area! This morning I checked this out on Goggle. Below are comments on this fly control idea. I’m now a believer !

    Sue says:
Many people swear that a zip-lock bag filled half-way with water and attached over entry-ways will repel flies. No one yet knows how or why it works, but there is speculation that it has something to do with the way the moving water refracts light.

    ann Says:
I did tried the ziplock bag and pennies this weekend. I have a horse trailer and the flys were very bad while I was camping. I put the baggie with pennies above the trailer door . NOT ONE FLY came in the trailer. Not sure why it works but it does!!!!!!!

    Danielle Martin Says:
Fill a ziplock bag with water and 5 or 6 pennies and hang it in the problem area. In my case it was a particular window in my home. It had a slight but significant passage way for insects.Every since I have did that, it has kept flies and wasps away. Some say, that wasps and flies mistake the bag for some sort of other insect nest and are threatened by this.

    maggie Says:
I swear by the plastic bag of water trick I have them on side porch (our house entry) and all around the basement door. We saw these in Northeast Mo at an Amish grocery store & have used them since. They say it works because a fly sees a reflection & won’t come around.

    Just DJ Says:
Regarding the science behind zip log bags of water? My research found that each of the millions of molecules of water presents its own prism effect and given that flies have a lot of eyes, to them it’s like a zillion disco balls reflecting light, colors and movement in a dizzying manner. When you figure that flies are basically prey for many other bugs, animals, birds, etc., they simply won’t take the risk of being around that much perceived action. I moved to a rural area and thought these “hillbillies” were just yanking my city boy chain but I tried it, worked immediately! We went from hundreds of flies to seeing the occasional one, but he doesn’t hang around long.

If I forward this to 10 friends will I get a new computer?

I’ll have to give this a try as I do have flies stalking me most all summer.

I could possibly understand it if the bags were left open, but zipped shut? Just plain weird. But I might still give it a try….I got flies causing me major rage right about now.

Maybe put some eggs, onions, cheese & peppers in it, and you can then eat it after its cooked in the sun

Yep, seems like I am doing a heck of a job repelling them this year.

I find this very difficult to believe. Even kooky. Let’s see some first hand IDO testimonials.

Well …I know a guy who lived in Cancun for a few years and he said that some of the outdoor food stands and such did this…

    It seemed to help……

I know a guy that runs a bait shop on Pool 4 of the Mississippi that’s standing in the door way looking at a ziplock bag of water scratching his head.

    Jury is still out.

So where does the jury stand on this now that some time has past. In my court room it is working, I have one inside the front door and one outside the front door. Both with five pennies, the pennies didn’t really make any sense to me, but neither did the ziploc bags of water.

Judgment for the plaintiff, only one fly in the last three days where as before I hung the bags I got four or five in the house daily.

I was in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico a few months back. A restaurant with outdoor seating had bags of water hanging around. I had to ask. Keeps the flies away is what I was told. We were not bothered by bugs during our meal! I did not see any coins in the bags.

I had a heck of a time finding the reply button.

Well, Dean’s going to have to be the judge on this one. I left Monday morning when I heard he was back in town.
