Ok here’s the deal my brother and I have been fighting all morning about how fast my boat would go with a bigger motor. And being a little brother makes him stupid. I say that if I drop a 90 e-tech on my 1648 lowe flat bottom that is 400lbs it would hit 80mph. He said no that if couldent go that fast it’s not geared rite. I said your stupid and 2 years younger than me now go away. I am not going to do this just help me prove him wrong .

I don’t think a 90 hp would go that fast is you put it on an inner tube. I think your brother is right, the gearing must be right.
jhalfenPosts: 4179August 12, 2009 at 4:11 pm #796974Let’s see…that boat’s rated for 35 hp and you want to put a 90 on it?
Have a nice trip to the ER.
August 12, 2009 at 4:11 pm #796975I really do not know how fast your boat would go with that motor, but I too am curious. If you decide to try this out please let me know, I would make the trip to watch.
August 12, 2009 at 4:13 pm #796976420 lb boat plus weight of passenger, motor, gear & max HP rating of 35hp????? I would think I would wait to see if you survived over powering a litttle jon like that before I would try it.
August 12, 2009 at 4:17 pm #796978I don’t think you are going to hit the MPH…
You will flip the boat first.
I had a customer with a 16′ Alumacraft jon boat with a 40 HP motor (max motor rating). He normally fished with his wife and large dog in the boat… One day he decided to go by himself, he gunned the motor just a bit too much… almost put himself in the water. The front end of the boat came right up out of the water – he forgot to compensate for no weight up front.
Please be careful.August 12, 2009 at 4:23 pm #796981OK, curiousity was getting to me. Talked to a lead Merc racing designer/engineer. After a few laughs, here is what we have…48 to 50 mph then the boat will flip over. Even at that, more assumptions would nned to be made. You would need a modified V and pad to extend to the transom, Cleaver Design prop, Hydrol Jack plate, and that list went on.
80 MPH = No Way in a Lowe 1648. Little Brother is smarter than you give him credit for
August 12, 2009 at 4:27 pm #796985I would have loved to seen you and your brother play together in your childhood…
August 12, 2009 at 4:28 pm #796987Quit telling him no……I was seeing next years Darwin Awards winning story.
Ya’ll watch this.
August 12, 2009 at 4:35 pm #796991Hello Red-neck Race Fans and welcome to todays event. Over here we have young and dumb with half a brain and on the other side we have old and wise with a severe brain defficiancy and next in line to call for a ambulance. Do me a favor and dial 911 before you start that motor up and let them know where they can pick up the peices
August 12, 2009 at 4:40 pm #796993A change of prop pitch is essentially a change of gearing.
There may be some limitations involved there but it is a gearing change.
Not agreeing or disagreeing with anybody on the 80 MPH / ER scenarios but you can put the gearing issue to rest.
August 12, 2009 at 4:41 pm #796994As Ron White would say, your boat will be fast enough to take you all the way to the scene of the crash…
August 12, 2009 at 4:45 pm #796998I will be sitting on the dock with your little brother watching. Good Luck
August 12, 2009 at 5:01 pm #79700380mph? Only if you leave it on the trailer, and have a strong enough tow vehicle.
HRGAugust 12, 2009 at 5:08 pm #797005My vote is for the younger brother…..I don’t think you’d get 80 mph no mater what pitch prop you put on there…
August 12, 2009 at 5:09 pm #797006My small boat is a 1648M with a Evinrude 30, it will do 30 mph loaded with a 10×13 prop. If the boat was doing 45 or 50 mph I don’t think I would want to be in it. Just go to the bow and see how easy it is to pick up, the weight to pick up the bow is how much wind pressure it would take to flip you. Although I do think the motor would do 80 maybe 90 mph you would be hard pressed to keep the boat in the water and together.
August 12, 2009 at 5:14 pm #797008How big of a spoiler do you have on the front of the boat?????
I am sure it “can” be done. But I aint smart enough to figure out how.
August 12, 2009 at 5:29 pm #797014Dose anybody have a 90 e-tech that I can borrow I just want to look at it I’ll give it back when I’m done?

dslarsPosts: 37August 12, 2009 at 6:18 pm #797032I dont think an e-tech would go that fast but, I bet an optimax would!!

Yes this does sound like my cousins…..Tim’s brother is now racing 4 wheelers and he told me he isn’t happy unless he is clearing 40foot jumps or more…
August 12, 2009 at 6:26 pm #797036I’m in full support of you trying this. Hell, give me about 18 beers and I’d probably volunteer to be the weight needed to hold the bow down. Come on all you woosies, you only live once.
August 12, 2009 at 6:34 pm #791949Yep I’m the smart brother. 40 foot jumps on a 4 wheeler that’s just crazy. Thanks kooty I’ll get the beers but you need your own life jacket.
August 12, 2009 at 6:50 pm #795650All I can say is I hope the mess is cleaned up and the reports are filed before Dean gets back.
