Do you warm your engine up?

Just wondering? I always give my motor atleast 5 minutes at ldel speed to warm up before I attempt to put the boat up on plane and go, even then I don’t go WOT for a couple minutes. When I bought the boat the dealship really stressed doing the for motor life, never really though about it until then, sure it always got a couple and ideled away from the dock, but then it was wide open, as fast as the 40hp would take me

Rarely if ever do I see people givce their motors time to warm up. Thoughts? ideas? Sounds like a solid idea, or is it hogwash?

I know it is critical for an Optimax to get up to 90-100 degrees minimum before running it very hard.

I can only guess to the thousand hours of run time on my yamaha. Its a 91, and pushed my 181 DYNA at 59MPH at new. Now, its 54 to 56 pending conditions and the last compresion test I did shown a little use on the engine. I’m let’r run for a couple minutes and go. If its early spring and waters 32 to 50 degrees, I let it run a bit longer. At 18 years old, its still holds its own!

On my new HPDI I always let it warm up prior to putting on plane. These new yamaha’s don’t idle on all cylinders in nuetral so it is important to run it in gear to get a proper warm up. I don’t do anything to the tune of 5 minutes, more like a minute or so doesn’t take that long to get the lube flowing and some heat in the cylinders.

What they said.. it seems like 5 minutes but it’s probably only 2 or 3!

warm up time depends on the temps…

Yes! I can’t say if it is for 5 minutes or not though. Put the boat in the water, start her up, tie of to dock, pull trailer out of water, walk back to boat, place keys in safe place, turn on sonar/GPS, untie and idle out a bit. Probably way more than five minutes when I am by myself.

When putting in at Clinton St. on Pool 8 there is no doubt what so ever that it gets warmed up with a ten minute no wake zone.

During the winter time I don’t think that my big motor even gets warmed up because I rarely run out of sight of the landing.

For cooling down I try to run half throttle or less for the last five minutes of water time.

I’ll typically let it idle for at least 5 minutes. Early spring with the colder water temps I’ll give it a little longer.

Who doesn’t have 5 minutes to warm up your motor?? You start it to take it off the trailer, why not leave it run until you get the truck parked and all passengers in!!

Always let all my motors warm up a bit. My old 175 EFI has to warm up at higher idle or it will sputter and die anyways. I’ve gotten used to it being cold blooded.

I watched a guy this weekend launch his very new Ranger/200 Opti….started it up while on the trailer, immediately floored it into reverse, water splashed all over the rear of the boat. He then back up, turned the boat around and floored it on plane, and across the lake he went. The driver of the truck and trailer drove to the cabin from there.

These are the people I fear when buying a used boat from.
