I just purchased a slitely used 2004 Yamaha 50 2-stroke. The guy I purchased it from always used Yamaha Oil? I would like to switch to a synthetic oil. I spoke to one guy who uses Penzoil sythethic which he buys at Walmart. He never has had a problem with any of the three Yamaha motors he has owned. Should I switch or not? What brand of oil do you us?

I have a Johnson on one boat and an Evinrude on the other boat. I use Johnson/Evinrude oil in both motors. I would be suprised if I used their oil and had any problems. If I had a Yamaha I would use Yamaha oil.

I do the same with my trucks and cars. They are all Ford, I use Motorcraft oil and filters.

Use the yamalube. Buy your own container and get it in bulk from your local dealer.

If you travel through Chippewa Falls stop in at the Skeeter Boat Center they can hook you up.

Always use Brand lube. Just ran into this with a Jetski. My son-in-law got a deal on some oil and it smoked, fouled plugs etc.

For the price of oil, I would run what the manufacturer recommends. Oil is cheap, a new motor is not.

I went through this earlier this year, after countless reading, and some reccomendations from and engine builder or two, i’m not running pennzoil semi synthetic, my major reason is I believe it to be superior to yamalube, not to knock yamalube, I don’t really think you can go wrong using oem oil, I just really think the pennzoil is a bit better. (based soley on info I’ve gathered from those I trust)

Also be sure to use ringfree or seafoam with each tank of gas as yamaha reccomends.

I switched to Amsoil synthetic after some good friends suggested it. I can’t tell a difference in my 60HP 2-stroke it still smokes about the same so I know it’s getting lube
Speaking of Seafoam does anybody know where you can get it cheap? I see it’s $15 a can at the local dealer and about $9 at Wally World. What happened to the $5-$6 a can it used to be???

The Yamalube is some good oil to run. You can run other brands of oil as long as the specifications of the recomended oil the manufacturer list is the same, check the specs out. Like mentioned before if you buy in bulk from the dealer, the oil will be down close to the same price range as the other oil. I dont think you would have trouble running the penzoil, but for the price difference I would stay with the factory oil. I have seen first hand what some of the cheaper oils have done to some 225 horse merc’s. It cost them a lot of money to rebuild.

Skeeter Boat Center has Yamalube 2M and 4M available for bulk purchase. Bring a jug and stop on by!

Fleet farm is about the cheapist around here for seafoam, they also sell it in gallon cans, but the price was better by the can

When we reffer to bulk oil, we mean it is oil that comes in a big drum, typicaly 50 gals. Most dealers will sell the bulk oil cheaper because they get a way better price then the gal jugs of the same oil.
