Take a mid range motor for example; a 4 stroke 115hp only weighs 44lbs more than a 2 stroke. IMO the fuel economy, lack of noise and smoke, makes the extra 44lbs worth its weight in gold. Not sure under what circumstance a 2 stroke would be a better option than a 4 stroke? Maybe on a really small boat where a few pounds could make a difference? The only negative I can see in a 4 stroke is they cost a bit more up front, but come time for resale you’ll more than make that up. With that said there are some old 2 strokes in the 10-40hp range out there that still run pretty sweet.
As for which brand is better?? I think most of the new motors out there are very good. I did have a Mercury salesman and a Mercury mechanic tell me at different times, if I was looking for a midsized tiller motor that I should buy a Yamaha
