can u buy the rod racks with the long tubes for your rod locker? my poles have been getting tangled up in there quite a bit. If u can buy these how much are they and where can u get them?

I purchased golf tubes at wal-mart & made a wooden template that attaches to the inside of my rod locker.

On the other side, I have been using rod wraps which has helped a lot.

If you have no luck finding them you can always get thin walled PVC (plumbing suplier) just make sure the tube is large enough for the rod eyes. you can use a heat gun to flare the recieving end. just a redneck thought if you cant find such a beast.

If you use individual rod socks you should be able to make better use of the space. Meaning you will be able to get more rods in to the same amount of space. Just a thought.

I built the tubes into the rod locker of a champion fishhunter once with the grey conduit type pipe. I just used a piece of 2X6 and a hole saw on one end to hold the sections of pipe. If you cut the hole just small enough, the pipe just barely squeezes in there.

On the rod butt end, I used a 2×6 again, and just cut smaller holes with the hole saw for rod butts. This let me put 5 rods stacked on top of each other on one side of the rod locker. This took care of all the spinning rods I took with, and left 75% of the rod locker for trolling rods.

Here is one I found online:

I have one that Came with my Boat and I’m not sure if I really like it. I can only get 6 or 7 rods in it. A few of my friends just have open rod lockers and use those new bright colored rod sleeves and can get 20 or more rods in theirs and never get them tangled. I may pull mine out and just go that route.

    Rod Socks!

    Randy,

What kind of socks are those? They look like they are made of a thicker material. Do they come in different sizes?

    Thanks,

Ok, I have a question for you rod sock guys? When I’m guiding I need to quickly change presentations or put away my rods if we’re traveling a long distance in rough conditions. I’ve only used socks a couple times but I need to put away and take out about 20-40 rods or more a day. Do you guys really put the socks on every time? And being I’m guiding I would need to be doing all the work. I just can’t see myself having time to do this? The next thing is how do you keep your reels from banging together? I have more than I care to mention invested into my rods and reels and I couldn’t bear to let them smack together driving across the lake. I’d have to say rod tubes for me are a must and I don’t know what I’d do without them. Very interested in what you guys have to say, just in case I end up running a boat someday without rod tubes.

To answer the original question, I’ve also heard the golf tubes work great. Good luck with your project.

My boat has a locker on one side with tubes and a tubeless locker on the other side. They are both the same size. The tube side has five tubes. I can fit 7 trolling rods in there if I use socks on the bottom rods and put two in each tube.

The tubeless side currently has my rear running light, my mooring ropes, 9 spinning rods / reels, and 3 lead core rods. I could easily fit another 10 rods in there if not more.

To keep them from banging together I just put the longest rods in first, and then put each rod in a little further forward so the reel of the second rod sits just in front of the previous rod. All 9 spinning rods lay along one side of the locker. My leadcore rods sit on the other side of the locker, 8 footer in first, then the two shorties, also alternated with each one a little further forward.

If I get ambitious some day, the locker with tubes will be de-tubed so it is open.

If I’m running from one spot to another and plan to use the same rods, I don’t usually put them back in the locker. It they are going back in, it only takes about 10 seconds per rod to put the socks back on. I just throw them in and organize them later.

You can also get reel covers if you still feel the reels are going to get beat up. I haven’t had that issue yet though.

I use a simple 6 place rod holder on the bottom of my locker, berkley type made for use as a horizontal rod rack.

Then I lay another row of rods on top of that row with them more forward so the cork handles ride across the tops of the reels in the bottom row. Then another row on top of those placed in the same fashion.

All of them are in rods socks. Just put the ones you plan to use more or first nearer the top.

My reels don’t touch other reels that way and most look like new.
