I’m planning on buying a portable gps that I can use a lake map chip with. I want to be able to use this in the boat for fishing and in the car for directions. I’m thinking one of the Garmin Nuvi products would work well. Is anyone using a Nuvi with a Lakemaster chip? What other products would you recommend?

    Thanks for your help.

Lowrance Ifinders are good handheld units, but they do not do street routing. You can get street maps, but it will not give directions. Many of the Garmin Nuvi models will accept the Lakemaster maps. If your planning on using it on the water, I’m not sure how “water resistant” they are. Otherwise, Garmin makes several true handheld GPS devices that would be suited to outdoor use and offer street routing. One that comes to mind is the Garmin GPSMAP 76 line. Biggest downfall with these is the smaller screens. Obviously, the best approach would be to own a dedicated mobile device in the car and a dedicated marine device for the boat, but the MAP 76 would be a good compromise.

I see that the Nuvi 550 model is waterproof and supports Lakemaster maps. This may be a good option as well.

I’ve got an H2O and just love it. It’s not extremely direction-friendly like some of the units that are made for driving, but it works great. It does work well for driving if you have a Map Create cd so you can have every road at your fingertips, though.
