2009 Summer Get-Together on Rainy Lake!

    Hey boys,

I am going to talk with Rainy Lake One Stop today, and see what we can figure out. If we come up with a ## I will ask that each houseboat appoint a leader to take their portion of the minnows we reserve. I personally think it would be wise to get an assortment of Rainbows and shinners along with some fatheads. All those that want in please indicate so.

As far as keeping bait alive a Baittamer will make that fairly easy. I can sink one off my dock and keep bait alive even shinners without much of an issue. Here is what I might suggest; Sink a few baittamers or get a large tamer for your houseboat. I plan on sinking a few. One with Shinners, One with Rainbows and one with fatheads. We used to do this on BWCA trips and have fresh bait all week. If we can come up with a minnow count I will see what I can do, and have your group leaders name on your allotment.

    Layne and I are in.

We also vote Tuck as our houseboat leader in charge of bait.

I have a little plan for a large floating bait bag to float off the back of the houseboat. I’m thinking it could hold a hundred dozen minnows.

Concerning the minnows, Michael Collins & I from house boat #5 are in!

As for the rest of the crew aboard house boat #5, despite numerous attempts to contact them via phone, email or p.m. I have not been able to get any type of a response at all.
Including the 3rd guy who is supposed to be riding up with us and sharing my boat.
Gotta admit, its gonna be tough to figure where, when and how we’re going to pick him up with no return calls, emails or pm’s.

If anyone knows Dwight Schussman (Marble_eye) or Dan Harms (musky68) please let them know that I’ve been trying to get in touch with them.

BTW…..Sinking your Baittamers will preserve minnows much longer from past experience as the water temp is much more constant. Just place a small rock in the back and dump your minnows in. For those of you wanting crawlers or possibly leeches also make a note. Not sure at this point on their availability. Rainy Lake One Stop also carries a variety of tackle, gifts, clothes, food…. Don’t call it a One Stop shop for nothing!!

Contact made! Further communications not only possible but likely. House boat #5 is now back in the running for big fish or most fish or just having a bunch of fun catching fish.

    Hey James,

I have a sneaking suspicion that our group would like to make this an annual tradition like “Deer Camp”, and I also know we had to turn down a lot of people. If it is possible to reserve our spot for next year can we come up with a deposit due… after the trip for next years spot?? OK… Yep I’m Stoked!!

I’ll be talking to RLH about this very subject with the goal of having an answer on this before the end of the event.

Info on bait went out via email today to Joel Ballweg, Chris Tuckner, Chris Granrud, Steve Plantz and Ben Garver… basically one “lead” guy per houseboat. Those guys are asked to share that info with the rest of their houseboat crew. We’ve found a convenient way to reserve bait through the Rainy Lake One Stop. If anyone has any questions please let me know.

With regards to weather… here’s the averages for that time of year:

    September 16
    AVERAGES
    Hi 64.0°
    Lo 41.0°

I’m not going to even look at long range forecasts… I just hope some of the gorgeous weather we’re having this week holds over for our trip Sept. 16 – 20.

Hey guys, I’m new to this site and just read this thread. What a great trip you all will have. Rainy is one of my favorite places. I’m curious, where are you planning to fish? Are you going to be east of the Brule Narrows?

Our group site is located just inside the west entrance to the Brule.

    N 48′ 36.201′
    W 92′ 57.518′

We’ll be fishing the east and west end of the lake given our central location. Stop on out and say “hey” if you find yourself on the water next week. We’ll have a cold one and a fish story or two to share.

If you’re interested in attending this type of event keep your eyes peeled for an announcement regarding next year’s trip to go up here online right after this year’s event wraps up.

Anyone know where I can pick up a larger bait tamer 15 or 30 gallon, I am not having any luck finding one in Rochester. Our boat is going to need one for this trip.

No luck here Steve. I checked out the Fleetfarms, etc., w/o any luck. I’d call Dean ASAP and see if he can order you one up and have it drop shipped to you. Frabill also makes a BIG floating bait corral that you might want to have Dean look into as well.

Thanks for the invite, but it won’t work for next week.

Regarding minnows, be careful with the otters. My last houseboat trip, I had a floating minnow bucket, and the otters opened it up and got em all!

I’ll keep the video camera handy to record the Ranger’s response time and your followup beating.
