As excited as I am to drop the hammer down on some Fall fish here on THE Rainy Lake I am equally as excited to meet all of you and talk fishing. When discussing the details of this event with Billy I remember James and I looking at each other like 2 kids who just heard about there new “Up North” fishing trip. This is really the pinnacle of fishing in Minnesota in class at a very reasonable price. Experiencing Voyageurs National Park alone in September is worth the price of admission let alone the world class fishing. Sitting on the back of that big floating condo with a cool one looking through the digital cameras while forking in a couple more bites of fresh walleye!! Heck unless the Ifalls fishing BIKINI TEAM were to be baiting hooks and cleaning fish I can’t think how to make it any more appealing!! BTW I’m working on that;) For those that were unable to attend this falls event due to our size restrictions give Billy and Tommy a ring, they are ON BOARD with us here at IDO!! They work very hard to make each and every trip enjoyable. They have many packages and boats to choose from, and I HIGHLY encourage you to set your trip up with them for either the remaining balance of this year or for sure next year. From all the guests I guide for on the pleasure cruisers I always am greeted with happy families!! Don’t forget to mention that your an IDO Boy either!! I am not aware of any special deals for IDO members, but do know they like to track where their business is coming from like any well ran operation. I do plenty of guiding for the houseboats, and without exception when I pull up with the Daze Casket to these awesome units the guests seem to be having the time of their lives. Heck How couldn’t you!! Often I’ve been invited aboard, and am always sorry I have to leave!! As we get close to the departure dates I plan on putting together some updated information for all anglers coming on this trip as far as tackle is concerned. As always if you have one or two of something in your box you can be assured it will be the SECRET WEAPON!!

Few pics from Last September in case you might not be fired up yet!! BTW if you’ve missed this trip give me a shout we’ll be putting the wood to eyes all September and October!!

    Good Fishing Team!!

Chris those pics are killing me… that makes it even that much harder to wait another month and a half. It will be well worth the wait I am sure. Those are some dandy fish! I imagine everyone is as stoked as I am!

James, any options for people who just want to meet up and fish? Find their own lodging since things are full. My seasonal is only 40 minutes away so I may be interested in popping over a day or two if possible.

Absolutely! I’ll post the GPS coordinates for the beaching location for the main group of houseboats so anyone that wants to do so can come out and visit.

    Great question.

Question – Can we recharge our boat batteries each night by plugging into the house boat we are staying on?

Yes. The houseboats have 110 and 12 volt power. Bring an extension cord.

Chris…First off, really looking forward to meeting you!!!

Secondly, for us coming from the south…could you go recommend some basics jigs/line/lure combos for us to prepare for? Some of us may need to place orders with B-Fish-N Tackle or others…

    Thanks!!!

Hi Chris Likewise!! Gonna be a great trip!!

When fishing Jig and meat I find that the 3/16 oz. jig through BfishN seems to be ideal in most conditions. Due to potentially deeper water we’ll fish an 1/8 oz even in calm waters can be a critically slow presentation for me. I will however move to a 1/4 oz. in some wind. A wide variety of colors as on most waters is always a good idea. Orange and Chartruesse are always safe, but don’t be afraid to be creative.

When it comes to a plastic bite I’m a big fan of the Kgrubs that time of year, and I like to fish them with a color matching 3/8 to 5/8 oz. jig head due to the bouyancy of the big plastic in deeper water.

For line I’m a big fan of Powerpro in the Phantom red. I can see it while working jigs, and I don’t believe it has any negative effect on the bite. It also is key for long casting jigs and hooking up as I’m sure it is on the river.

I nice Med-light fast action tip St. Croix will suit you well. I like the longer 7ft rods for casting and shorter for vertical jigging or running the motor over structure.

Thanks Chris! I have a couple of St. Croix Legend Elites rigged up for just that!

I will be stocking up of the BFT jigs and K-Tails as well. Any specific colors other than oranges work on that body of water? I am going to go through my stock tonight!
    Cant wait!!

    Hi Chris,

Purple has been a hot jig color as of late. I also wouldn’t be caught without the firetiger patterns. For plastic colors I like the Oyster color and any whites or Opaque color combos imitating the smelt and ciscoes……..I usually fish them wtih the white 3/8 to 5/8 oz. jig head. Heck half the fun of a trip is just getting ready!!

Hey I own some walleye stuff
I’m not saying that if you have a hot lure it is catching the walleyes, it will still be in your boat in the morning though

Trust me I love those big smallies Slider!! Big slabs, Pike, and Walleyes are what we end up focusing most of our energy on though.

Chris, in your experience, how hot does the oil have to be for those smallies?
