This last weekend I was using the new st. croix avid rod I made and somehow a guide was badly damaged. Anyone have any suggestions on removing a guide and replacing it, or is this even possible?

    Thanks for your help

If you choose not to sent it into StCroix for repairs ,I am sure there must be a rod builder in your area that would replace it for you.

If you were down in my area I would do it just for the cost of the guide

removing the guide is the easy part removing the rod finish is the hard part ,you dont want to damage the rod in any way, the you must recoat the guide once you have retied the new one on, That is tough to do if one doesnt have a rod turner for do finishes and such..

Be patient ,some one from your area should chime in on this one soon

Check out Thorne Brothers in Fridley. They’ll get that thing fixed up as good as new.

THORNE BROTHER’S Talk to Lonnie he is the master rod builder there or you can talk to Josh Roundsley he is the owner. I am guessing that they will replace it for $20 bucks or so. They are the BEST!!!! hands down

Start cutting the wrap off on the metal part of the guide and it will peal off like an orange. Very easy to do.

This is exactly why I’d leave it up to a pro like Lonnie. Unless you have alot of confidence in your skills as a rod-builder (which I obviously don’t!), you’re likely to end up turning it into something you don’t like.

Thorne brothers has always treated me well in regards to my custom and commercial rods. Most recently, I had a custom rod built off of a Loomis Steelhead blank for rigging eyes. After fishing with it awhile, the grip simply didn’t suit me. Though I didn’t know exactly why, those guys are such pros, he didn’t only know how to make it exactly as I needed it, he knew what questions to ask to get to that endpoint.

The other nice thing is that he’ll have an endless supply of materials to do as close to an exact match of your other wraps and finishes as you have on the other guides.

Good luck on whichever you decide.
