Good afternoon all! I currently have a run of the mill locator on my boat. If I upgrade to one with a gps capability, in your opinions, is there a good medium priced unit that any of you would recommend? Thank you!

The Humminbird 788c is a really nice sonar/GPS combo that is priced right! I have one on the bow of my boat right now.

The down-looking sonar technology is the same that you’ll find in the higher-end Humminbird units, and Humminbird’s GPS is highly accurate: the new 50-channel GPS receiver typically has 9-11 foot position uncertainty in my boat. Humminbirds currently accept Navionics chips, but Lakemaster recently announced that they will have a Humminbird-compatible chip available next year.

I’ll also put a good word in for the Humminbird 788C. With the current sale price, it’s really tough to beat. (That sale ends at the end of this month.) I see that you are located in Missouri so you will probably want to get the Navionics Hotmaps Premium South SD chip for that unit as well. It offers a ton of lakes in Missouri and the surrounding states. You don’t have to get the map chip, but it really increases the benefit of any GPS unit. It can always be purchased at a later time if you are keeping to a specific budget right now. And as Jason said, if you ever need a Lakemaster Chip for it, they are releasing those for Humminbird soon as well. The 788C would be a great choice!
