Trolling motor problem looking for cause

I was using the trolling motor last night and the thing would just stop and then start. It was still getting “juice” b/c I could hear it humming…..so I think a loose connection can be ruled out.

My buddy bought this motor (we share the boat) and he said water could be getting into the motor??

    It’s a hand-operated unit. Any ideas?

Bad switch or loose wire at the switch.

I had this happen to my trolling motor a couple of years ago and it turned out I had a bad seal in the head of the motor, so water was getting into it.

not ruleing anything out but i have seen bad brushes and bad windings in the motor do that. a way that sometimes diagnoses it is if the motor has low power (low torque) or when it does entirely stop spinning the prop, you can get the prop spinning again but helping it with a finger push. just a thought bud.

MinnKota? Bad connection in the twist handle switch. I have seen that a couple of times. Had one with a dead spot that felt like you were kicking it into high gear after you got past the spot!

    You need new brushes.
