Hey everybody I’m just curious on what you guys would do in my situation. Hear is my story I dropped my boat off may 30th at shop X well it sat for a few days no big deal. The mechanic looks it over calls me up says 50 dollar part I tell him order it up and put it in. He then takes vacation no big deal. Another mechanic looks it over and calls me up today and says 500 dollar part is needed. Now does mechanic 1 no nothing or is this shop looking to get some money out of me? And the new part would take another 2-3 weeks to get in and I need my boat by the 1st of the month for the upcoming tournaments. Sorry for the rant.

Ask for a written estimate each time before you OK the work. Some shops smell a fast buck and don’t give a hoot about you. Others especially if you bought your rig from them have a vested interest in your happiness. Right after I bought my rig new, I was having issues at low speeds. Seemed a slam dunk to me that the carb needed adjustment. I was up north and went to a place I didn’t know who put on the muffs and started it up but he turned the water off on a little switch so none got there. he tried to tell me I had a blown power head. My buddy netman was along and asked about the switch on the hose, turned on, I no longer needed a new power head. Guy was lucky he didn’t get his face caved in. Beware of shops where you don’t know the people especially in touristy spots like Hayward. You know who you are.
I brought it back to starks the next week the adjusted the carb and no problems since then. They didn’t even charge me.
July 14, 2009 at 9:00 pm #790555Ask the manager what is going on with the 2 quotes from the mechanics. Then pull it and take it some where else. that’s my .02
July 14, 2009 at 9:01 pm #790556The thing is I did by this boat 4 years back from these guys (also my dad did and a buddy of mine). I think you guys are right get it out of there. The sad thing is I wanted to fish this early august out of it but oh well…
July 14, 2009 at 9:05 pm #790558Just talked to these guys a few hours ago. And who I talked to said the 1st mechanic must have went threw it way to fast to miss this so what does this say about this shop. I have a hard time believing that a mechanic would have went threw it way to fast to miss a major problem like this.
July 14, 2009 at 9:08 pm #790559just curious what was wrong with it and what is it that they are saying is wrong with it now?
July 14, 2009 at 9:17 pm #790562When it starts up it will rev threw the roof aka way way to high idles back down and goes right back up. After this 2-3 times it idles normal and runs fine but then hard to start up back up. The first mechanic said a ripped diaphram in the fuel pump and the 2nd says I need a whole new assemply (fuel pump hoses ect).
July 14, 2009 at 9:25 pm #790566I do not know allot about boat parts but 2-3 weeks seems like a long time just to get parts in maybe not.
July 14, 2009 at 9:38 pm #790574The first mechanic who is now on vacation until monday said I needed a new diaphram for the fuel pump for 45.44 if I remember right this was last thursday I said go for it he said he can have the part there saturday. So I keep calling them to get on it since I know the pc. is there and they call me today saying a different mechanic says I need a brand new fuel pump and some other assembly I dont remember off hand to upset to even listen to this guy at this point. This was all 2nd hand info from his mechanic never got to talk to his mechanic (to busy bull s%*$) if you ask me so thursday morning i am going to go there and pull it out.
July 14, 2009 at 9:39 pm #790575Like the others said, I would get it out of there and take it somewhere else. I had an issue last year with a Merc dealer and ended up taking it to a place in LaX. The guy was fast and very reasonable and sure knew what he was doing. For the life of me I can’t remember the name of the place but I can drive right to it. Maybe someone on here knows the shop. It is over the via-duct past Monsoor’s heading south. Turn right at the Kwik Trip and down the street on the left side. Sorry I can’t give you a name.
July 14, 2009 at 9:48 pm #790578ok this is a 175 evinrude if that helps because i have talked to certain shops and said they dont work on evinrude.
July 14, 2009 at 9:53 pm #790582Agreed on pulling it…too fishey.
However it does sound like a fuel fpoblem and the bad diaphram sounds likely a culprit from the description. for further refrence for the next shops reply.July 14, 2009 at 9:55 pm #790583Once i got burned by a mechanic who added a whole slug of parts to the repair order that I signed on the bottom line like they all tell you to do. After that experience whenever they have me sign at the bottom I also draw a line under the last item and sign that line too. They always ask why and I tell them anything added below the line without my authorization is your bill. Funny how I havent gotten burned again. They get the message.

Not a bad idea.
July 14, 2009 at 10:41 pm #790591Just got off the phone with the owner of this shop and he says a small platic pc is broken which is letting gas back in and fourth and he says this pc is no longer available to purchase so you need to buy a whole new fuel pump. Well since im a machinist i am pretty sure i could make a cheap plastic part. Just keeping you guys informed on whats going on.
July 14, 2009 at 10:47 pm #790592Is the plastic piece removeable ? Check out for one off a salvage motor maybe ??? If you have to buy the whole thing, just have them put the plastic part on your fuel pump and keep the other as a spare. In your “spare” time, design the little piece out of a tougher material and I bet you can market them

July 14, 2009 at 10:51 pm #790594I agree too. I would find someplace else. But just curious… Did you type the date wrong that you dropped it off? May 30th?? Don’t tell me that 6 weeks have gone by since you dropped it off.
I just had my boat in the shop before the 4th and their backlog was at 3 days.
July 14, 2009 at 10:55 pm #790595He says the platic pc is broken and cant be put back on and can’t get his hands on another. He said its just a clip to keep gas from going back and fourth so im sure i could even make something work instead of paying 500 dollars. I told him I was a machinist and could probably make something and he wasnt for sure. Will find out thursday.
July 14, 2009 at 11:25 pm #790601Team Marine in LaCrosse. Dan Thill and a great crew of mechanics. Re-built my Opti and it runs better now than before! Highly recommended.
CurtJuly 14, 2009 at 11:36 pm #790603what year motor is it?
I go to a couple of other websites and pull up part lists/costs to see the complexity and availability of it before approving anything. Like others, I visited a bad one, and left as an educated consumer.
July 14, 2009 at 11:50 pm #790604I was told since evinrude was sold to bombardier that they didnt make the one plastic pc. I need they make you buy the whole new fuel kit. So maybe its not a bad idea to see if I can find the one little plastic part I need. I am running a 2001 175hp evinrude ficht motor.

buck-slayerPosts: 1499July 15, 2009 at 12:21 am #790611I agree to pull the boat. But won’t they try charging something to look at it? And you say no to it can they keep the boat? I’m sure its in a fenced area.
