Molly our lab got her ears bit by horse flies and they are swollen, what can can I give to reduce the swelling, looks like she has grape fruit for ears.

She got her nose stung by a bee 2 years ago and looked like pug her whole nose and faced swelled up, I cant remember what the vet gave her but it was pretty basic

Probably some sort of antihistamine like diphenhydramine (Benadryl) or chlorpheniramine. I don’t have a clue what the dog dose would be (or if dogs should even take it – I assume they can, but not sure…), so run it by your vet first… But I would guess it was something like that if it was a simple OTC fix… Otherwise some sort of RX steroid like prednisone or methylprednisolone to reduce the swelling.

I have a sheet from my vet with the dosage for dogs. I can try to find it tonight if this is route you are going to try.

Just regular benadryl will work, I’ve used full adult dose on my 110# black lab after he got a face full of ground bees one time. His face had swelled up so much he could hardly open his eyes and his ears were almost an inch thick!! . We were out hunting when he got stung and it took about 15 to 20 min for him to start swelling up. By the time we got back to the truck his eyes were almost shut. I called my vet and she said to give the benedryl so ran to the nearest town, found a gas station for some pills and a phone book to find a vet (140 miles from home of course . It was a Sat afternoon and by the time I got to a vet it had been about an hour after giving the dose, and he had recovered about 70%. The vet did give him a steroid shot too but it prolly wasn’t needed by then.

you can give your dog standard, over the counter benadryl. my lab is 80lbs, and my vet said i can safely give 2 regular dosage pills.

so, depending on how large your lab is, 1 to 2 pills. i would probably just stick to 1 capsule, unless your dog is the same size.

If you don’t want to pay for a vet visit, I’d give her Benadryl. Should do the trick!

make sure its regular benadryl, not any special types, as they may have pain relievers in them that are toxic to dogs.

They may not be swollen, it could be hematoma’s from the dog shaking it’s head because of the biting flies. Check the ears closely they will fill with blood from the constant shaking. If you think they are filling with blood you should think about getting her to a vet. In a worse case senario if this is happening she could need surgery. My wife and I own a dog grooming business and we see a couple dogs a year that have this kind of problem. Suprizingly a couple of vets in our area had NEVER seen it before and didn’t know what to do. One of the best things to do is wrap her head so her ears are above her head. This isn’t an easy thing to acomplish since it will drive her nuts and she’ll want to keep shaking. Hopefully this isn’t the case and the benadryl will work. Call me if you have any questions.

Also be advised that the benadryl might make your dog drowsey. So if she is “out of it” or is napping alot, thus the reason why.

Vets also recommend benadryl for your dog if you are traveling and want to sedate the dog a bit for the vehicle ride. Apparantely it is quite easy on the dog’s system.

This is what I got from my vet for my 100lb dog when he was having skin issues. Seems like some pretty high dosages, so? I do recall that Chlorpheniramine worked better than Diphenhydramine.

    Diphenhydramine – 4 capsules, 3 times a day (25 mg pill)
    Chlorpheniramine – 2 tables, 3 times a day (4 mg pill)
    Clemastine – 2 tables, 2 times a day (1.34 mg pill)

if there is a bee hive near i dont know what to tell you but to keep flys and knats away put skin so soft on her keeps most flying and biting bugs away + makes her smell great.

Deffinately an allergic reaction. Sounds like she’ll need a shot of epinephrine. Might want to check into getting a e-pen from your vet to keep at home too. Have him show you how to give a IM shot and you’ll be set.
