My 97 4-Runner has no lights to my trailer what so ever. I know for sure my trailer lights are OK. I have traced to wires back as far as I can and everything looks good, the fuses are all OK also. Anyone have an idea on where to look to get these working?

Any corrosion on the hookup to the trailer?

I had an issue about 6 months ago and couldn’t figure it out, cleaned up the contacts good and all was well

Check to make sure you have a good solid ground. I have run into some trouble with this myself. I always had to hit the brakes a few times on one of my boat trailers before they would work right. The first few times you would hit the brakes everything would go out then check the contacts and try again and all would work.

    Good luck

How do you have the trailer grounded? I ended up connecting the white ground wire up to the truck’s wiring and had much much better luck, a lot of trailer’s Ive seen were only grounded through the ball when hooked up to the truck and thats not a good way to do it.

Secondly most trucks (can’t speak for your toyota) have fuses in atleast two seperate places.

if you trace the harness on the vehicle where does it go ? some vehicles have a little black converter box that the trailer harness comes out of and that box plugs into the factory harness. that box will go bad. also do the tail lights on the vehicle work ok ?

They go into a small hole under in front of the spare into a metal frame. I cannot tell where they go from there. I pulled both tail lights and found nothing?

tell me exactly what model 4 runner you have and I will look at a wiring schematic. also there is a fuse box under the hood and inside by the steering column make sure to check both as previously stated.

Kinda bad news not just a cheap fix its likely the converter box
Here is a link to location and repair process
    web page
Check the ground First by Splicing in a fresh ground on vehicle side of connector.
Sand n Clean metal spot on frame use self tap hex head screws with a ring terminal and same size wire guage.
If lights work problem solved, No Lights its the converter box roughly 50 bux
