It is simple amazing how quickly things change on the river. Last weekend clarity was horrible in all my hot spots. Couldn’t see your jig 6″ above the water surface let alone 6″ below! By mid week clarity was excellent. So good I was ready to drink from it after I ran out of bottled H20! With the thermal dial cranked to HIGH all week the water temps shot to the 80 degree mark in some back water sloughs. Fishing a closing damn, I got a little to cute with my casts and old man river was quick to claim the rights to a couple of my bomber craw patterns. The closing wing was slow going for fish activity but I had to try it. Those are typically good locations to hit when fish or water conditions are in transition. From there I proceded to find a good number of smallies hanging just off current breaks in rocks. Typical mid summer pattern for smallies. The “closer” (Bomber 6A Craw) & blue chrome Rat L Traps did most of the lip ripping. A 16 incher was the biggest I managed to pull.
Early morning bite should be going strong with water temps as high as they are. With my change in work ~ work schedule from bar time hours to banker hours I haven’t been able to fish the early AM. All my damage has happened after 7:00pm at night.
