I rented a Ford Focus to drive while my F-350 was being worked on. Seemed like a decent car, good pick up fairly comfortable.

But when I went to fill the gas tank before returning I was surprised to read something on the gas cap cover. It said the car operated best when using BP gas. What? When did car companies start taking advertisements from gas companies?
It’s not a big deal but it did surprise me.

Actually I do believe BP gas in most cases to be the best, I had a tuned and tweaked turbo Subaru, that was somewhat sensitive to gas quality because of it’s tweaking, no doubt I usually got better gas mileage with BP gas. MPG or two, in a car that got 23 mpg or so, in my case I think it was more consistent and such and kept the car for pinging and retarding the timing, complicated, not real scientific , but I really did grow to believe it. Doesn’t seem to much extra for my non turbo’ed and tweaked rides now, so in which case it may be a little better. but not enough to warrant their usual couple cents a gallon (depends I’m sure on the station and location) and the usual station I’d visit has some really slow pumps

Are you sure the rental CO did not place that sticker on there?

It was through Tenvorde Ford in St. Cloud. I guess they could have but I don’t know why they would.

Ford has been doing this for a while. My wife and I had a 2007 Focus and now own a 2008, both had the BP recommendation on the gas cap. Not sure what kind of kickbacks they are getting but both my F150 and the car run better on BP gas.

Each ford we have had since about 2004 or 2005 has had that on the gas cap, I am sure they work together, but with my focus and commuting 310 miles a week I get the best gas mileage running BP gas (30mpg) compared to gas at Holiday and SuperAmerica which both go between 27 – 29mpg.

That’s interseting and almost unbeliveably that you would get better peformance out of BP Gas. But I’ll take your guys word for it…

I never buy BP if at all possible.

It has been on the Fords for several years now as mentioned. I am not 100% sure why but I know before they started to put it on the caps we, in the dealerships, were told to use Super America’s gas when possible. That was 10 years ago now and I wonder is SA and BP are the same company now? My results are similar to those above with BP. But the BP in my town is owned by a rather pompous [censored] and I choose not to participate in his business so I normally use Citgo gas.

GM has a tech bulletin the talks about fuel quality and rates them on there cleanliness and ability to reduce deposits in the combustion chamber. Last time I looked Shell was the only supplier in the metro that was rated a top tier fuel.

Thank you for your input on this topic. I understand your choice not to use your local BP dealer. As bad as he may be he is much, much better then the psycho dictator that owns Citco. As an American I would ask you and any others reading this to boycott anything Chavez owns and controls.
