Virus Protection

I need some advice for home PC protection. I’ve been without any spyware or virus protection for about a year, was never impressed with what the stuff was finding. Now I’m getting nervous.

If you had to start from scratch and purchase a new product for a home PC, what would it be and why? If you know the cost that would be helpful also.

    Thanks in advance!

I’ve been running the AVG free virus stuff for 3 years now without an issue. Some days I feel bad and think about paying them something. Then I sober up. Spybot and Adaware for the other junk.

Works great and it’s totally free.

We use Trend Micro. It’s not free but we have not had any problems.

I do what these guys tell me to do:

    What the Tech Forums

I got a nasty Spyware/Adware virus a couple years ago and they got me out of it for free.

    They are experts.

If I were to buy antivirus, I’d go currently with Avira, otherwise I use a combo of AVG free, spybot search and destroy, and Malwarebytes. Avira has a free version too, and you can get free products to cover the areas that the free versions don’t cover under the free antivirus. Been using AVG for IIRC 5 years, I’ve been infected with viruses, but nothing I couldn’t take care of, no antivirus is 100%, as of late Avira is the best.

I heard that Mac was having other companies write some of there software so they aren’t virus free anymore.

    Cougereye,
Don’t know who you have for your internet provider, but some of them like Comcast will give you free antivirus protection. I had AVG and had problems everytime I went on IDO. Had a spy program on my computer AVG didn’t catch, but McAffe from Comcast did right away.

AVG is anti-virus….It’s not designed for Spyware….
Spybot S&D is the freeware for them..

The newer versions of AVG 8.0 and up do offer some Spyware protection.
I would also recommend Spywareblaster unless you are running IE7. Also for backup scanning, Malwarebytes, Superantispyware (disable the homepage protection if you like) and A-squared free.

Ok, so far I’ve been able to download AVG free and have found 19 threats and taken care of them. My system is now semi-stable again.

What I seem to have going on is an error message that keeps popping up trying to get me to buy Internet Anti-Virus Pro for $90. Saying that I have death viruses and what not. I think this is the virus and its just trying to get me to enter credit card #.

    Anyone come across this?

Thanks for all your help to date!

I didnt do a search, but I’m fairly confident the malwarebytes will take care of it.

http://malwarebytes.org/ Make sure you update it and run it every once in awhile.

Also download install and run spybot, make sure you imunize your system after all updates. This program will help keep you from getting infected in the first place. http://www.safer-networking.org/en/spybotsd/index.html

I always post links, because there are a lot of spyware programs out there that claim to help you and they just infect your computer, so follow my links.
