    Hi,
I am looking for some help. I am thinking about getting a new boat; nothing too big. Maybe a 16 or 17 footer. I was wondering what is the biggest motor you can buy that will actually troll down to a walleye speed troll? I will put a good electric trolling motor on the the boat but it is nice to have a back-up if the batteries die or it is real windy. I don’t want to mess with a kicker. Any help would be appreciated.

Till or console? If you’re going tiller some of the VTS (Variable Trolling Speed) equipped mid-range horse power yamaha 4 strokes will get you about as slow as you can get with your main motor.

Here’s a press release on those motors:

“Anglers who troll for fish or who backtroll to stay on top of any gamefish they might find need as much control over engine speed as they can get. Yamaha responds to this need by introducing the all-new optional Variable Trolling Speed System (VTS) on all four-stroke tiller-handle outboards from F50 through F90.
VTS allows the angler to increase or reduce engine speed by 50 RPM by using the simple, tiller-mounted UP/DOWN switch. The following outboards, including high-thrust and Jetdrive models, feature VTS for added throttle control: F90 including the new 25-inch shaft F90, F90 Jetdrive, F75, F60, T60, F60 Jetdrive, F50 and T50.”

I was thinking console but am willing to consider either. Thanks for the information, I will definitely look into to these motors.
