Hey guys I just got the ok from the fiance tonite to start saveing money for a move. I wanna move somewhere with awesome walleye fishing. If it has open water most of the year that’s even better. My fiance is 25 and I am 24. We have two small children. She is a nurse. We would like to live in a town of 40,000-100,000 people. What lakes are around rochester mn? She would have no problem getting a job at maddonna. Just wanted some of your guys opinions on where to move. Thanks guys

Huh? I’ll bet you are typing from a Crackberry, and you typed MN and it auto spelled MINUTE, huh? Mine does that all the friggin time. drives me nuts!

Roch you would have Pool 4 open year around. Bemidji and GR are in northern MN. Small towns with the bigger town feel. GREAT lakes close by!!!

Not many lakes by Rochester, it would probably be the River and Zumbro there.

St. Cloud, Duluth and Brainerd would be a couple other possibilities. All MiNute.

Yes I am typing from a blackberry. Is the walleye fishing pretty good on pool 4 at rochester? I have never fished a river before. How much different is it from a lake? I have heard they are a lot harder to understand. Is that true? Thanks for the help chris?

If I had my choice of any place to live in MN I would pick Red Wing!!!! It is a little small for what you are looking for but it is the center of the universe as far as Walleye fishing in Minnesota

All great choices! You could also look at Detroit Lakes MN. Tons of great fishing and only 45 miles from Fargo/Moorhead.

If your significant other is a nurse then Rochester is the place to be. Nurses are in demand here. And it’s hard to beat the quality of Pool 4 for fish. 35 miles to Lake City and 55 miles to Deans front door at Everts. Well at least from my house.

Where are you moving from?? Moving to Mn can give a person sticker shock if you are coming from a place like SD. State income tax. Very high property taxes. Wages that are slightly above average compared to neighboring states. The cost of living in MN is quite high.

All that said, the fishing in this state is probably second to only Canada. However, without leaving the state, you can catch monster walleyes year round. Trophy catfish & sturgeon at the right times. Then throw in a musky and the very little mentioned salmonoids(not even sure this is a word) of Superior, it’s pretty darn good. All within a day’s drive for the most part.

From what you described, Rochester is going to be a great place for your wife to work and have the size of community she desires. Pool 4 is a year round fishery that many would argue is tops in the nation. Certainly top 5 in my book. I would stay away from the Minneapolis/St.Paul area. Ya, it’s got it’s perks, but the commutes and other BS of the big city take their tole on me.

    Good luck in your search!!

LaCrosse would be a great area. and the waterfowl hunting is phenomonal on that pool of the river!

another option for you is the Brainerd/Baxter area. big enough to find a job, yet “up north” still. and a short drive to “The Pond”…

Actually with the economy the way it is Mayo is not hiring right now, I know nursing students who are not able to get jobs right now but hopefully that will not last forever and things will turn around. If your wife can get into Mayo and you were to move to Lake City or Redwing she could ride the one of the commuter buses to work and they are very reasonable.

don’t leave out Eau Claire. Similar proximity to pools 4 and 5 and starting to get reasonable distance to the north country. Ithink there are 2 hospitals, 1 a Mayo affiliate, the other a Gunderson Lutheran.

well lets see, YOU CAN LIVE WITHIN 3 minutes of the river or 45 minutes or more. You can live in a town that twice has been named number ONE in the country or not.

You can work at the ORIGINAL GUNDERSON LUTHERAN, or St.Francis which is Mayo affiliated.

and you can live where its 10 degrees warmer all WINTER or not.. You choose..
