Abnormal trailer tire wear

I bought an used rig and I’m getting some cupping on the inside of both tires on the trailer. Since its the inside of both I’m not thinking the axle is out of alignment.
Max air preasure is 50,…it had 44 psi. so not badly underinflated. Any ideas? They are Carlisle tires so they aren’t the best but I’ve done ok with them if you watch the air preasure. Thanks.

Sounds like there is to much weight from the boat on the trailer. to much weight would cause the axle to flex in the middle therefore tipping the tires in, and then causing wear on the inside of both tires.

That would be my best guess. What type of rig do you have??

Check the fenders on your trailer. I had the same thing happen to mine.

Turns out that the bolts were in the wrong holes on the fenders. This positioned them too close to the tires, so they would rub.

I didn’t realize this until a buddy heard a high pitched whining sound coming from wet tires on plastic when I was pulling out of a launch.

That only took me 8 years to figure out For the longest time I just thought that it was a boat weight issue like Eric said.

    Hope that helps.

I had horrible luck with this to til I switched the brand and load class of the tire.

I had to weld a gusset on the bottom of the axle on my trailer – just not heavy enough. After ruining 2 sets of tires in 4 years, I have now gone 5 on one set of tires. We actually held down ends of axle and jacked up center (past straight by 1/2 inch) and welded in gusset – turned out to be the exact correct repair. I complained about mine when it was quite new and got a replacement axle – manufacturer thought it was faulty – turns out it was just plain under rated. In retrospect, my big tub should have had a dual axle trailer in the first place

That sounds like an under-inflated tire to me. Check the air pressure

I had a new set of tires wear out in one trip. I took the trailer to Royal Tire in St. Cloud to check out the alignment and they said it was fine. They said the replacement tires were just no good. I ran the new set they sold me for ~ 5000 miles W/O any problems so I concluded they were correct. I bought the bad set at Northern but cannot remember the brand name.

I bought a package with a karavan trailer. This package came with bias ply carlisle tires and at the begining of the 2nd season I blew both tires out.I took it back to the dealer where i bought it and they checked the alignment of the axle and it was ok at which time they recomended switching to a radial tire. I have not had a problem since.

I was blowing through a set of tires each year for 3 years. Found out I had a bent axle.

I would look at three things
    1. poor quality of tire
    2. over weight capacity
    3. axle/hub problem

    Carlisle = Junk
There is your issue if the trailer checks out ok.

My buddies boat had them and you should have seen how individual lugs were wearing differently. I have also read the discussions about blown tires on other popular fishing websites also with this brand.

So are Goodyear Marathon radials still the tire of choice? I figure it’s time for new ones on my trailer.

Thanks for the ideas everyone. I have a Lund Explorer 1800ss with a 150 e-tec, kicker, bowmount etc. The trialer is a Yacht Club with surge brakes. I believe its rated for 4000lbs but I suppose the axle still could be flexing. I rotated them to even out the wear. Hopefully that wasn’t a dumb idea.
