August Vacation – What to do?

In August my wife and I have a week off. We have also been lucky enough to have my brother and his wife join us. Everyone in the group is pretty serious about fishing, except me. I am insane about it. Initially we had planned on renting a cabin at TFF, but due to water levels and my nervousness around damaging my new yamaha, have since passed. As we are looking for places it is looking more and more like we might camp due to the cost difference of renting a cabin, plus I have a new tent to try out. Wherever we go I am bringing my new Skeeter as I cannot see going fishing somewhere for a week without it. My brother rolls in a Tracker V-17. Looking for some good combined bass fishing, walleyes and musky or pike. Chains of lakes where we can hit multiple’s with the same launch would also be nice.

Any lakes and places to stay thoughts?

Whitefish chain in Crosslake MN, has good fishing on a large chain of lakes with decent fishing and restaurants on the lake (you can boat right up) There is a Army Corp of Engineers campground. http://www.exploreminnesota.com/listing.aspx?EntityId=1807 I’m a bit biased, since our cabin is on the chain, but I think it’s the perfect area. Be forwarned it’s no secret, and campground spots can be at a preimum, but I don’t know the exact details getting one. (see link)

    Nic:

Camp on the TFF!!! Take your boat and GO SLOW!!!! Two things about the TFF are one it can only go down 4 feet total and two if you go slow, you can fish anywhere around your campsite and probably find many places to catch fish!!! Camp and fish with guide Don Pemble!!! Need some more help, PM me, I am in Minocqua. There are plenty of campgrounds in my area to go with the plenty of lakes. And if you’re given ‘er hell on any of them you could find something just as nasty as the TFF!!!

Namekagon, Big Chetak, Miller Dam are all good places. Petenwell/Castle Rock is always a good producer. Namekagon would be my pick.

Come to Lake Wissota….right down the road from your favorite boat dealer. August is dynamite Smallie and Musky fishing with spurts of walleye activity as well.

I still have some openings in my August calendar if you need a tour…

Lake Mille Lacs, the smallies should be on a tear, the pike, skis and eyes all should be biting.
Plenty of places to pitch a tent

If you’re really into trying something new, consider Devils Lake, ND. The variety of fishing is awesome, the ability to catch numbers and size of fish (walleye, pike) is tough to duplicate stateside. They have some nice campgrounds up there, the best being the state park with the best launch and fish cleaning shack around.

The other cool thing about Devils Lake is the terrain. There are places where you’ll be trolling down and old flooded roadbed, fishing the ditches, or pitching to weeds just off the newly flooded train tracks. But the best is the wood, don’t anchor here, just tie up to a tree and drown a leech under a slip bobber.

Camping on the Miss is always cool. Plus, if you spend a week in a pool, you’ll discover a lot of spring/summer/fall spots for the future!

I agree with Mrjigger on Namekagon, it’s a great lake, but all the mentioned lakes would be a blast— that North Dakota trip sounds interesting.

I would be down for a big road trip, but I think the rest of the gang isn’t up for it. Sturgeon Bay / Little Sturgeon does sound pretty good, grew up in Green Bay, spent a lot of time hammering the Smallmouth up there when I was in my teens. The mighty miss sounds pretty good as well. Spent a lot of time up there last September pre-fishing for a tournament championship. Caught some huge LMB and SMB, and there are lots of possibilities for camping. Have a good memory of launching the boat on pool 8 out of goose island campground and taking 5 hours to find the actual river. Only got stuck 5 times, 1 time that almost broke the push pole… I also have been toying with the idea of heading up to the Minoqua area, but looking for something a bit different. Wissota sounds a bit interesting, the series I fish in has the final coming up there again in a few years. Keep the ideas coming.

I took my Dad to this place last year and it’s very nice and you can fish up to 9 different lakes from their docks.
