BTW, did I mention my father’s uncanny ability to catch big fish from there every year? Oh sure, I had a few over the slot too, but he is hoarding those pics taken on his camera. I love the coloring on the fish from up there.

The fishing was decent, if you found fish, they bit. The conditions were not the best. Day 1, clouds, 35-40 degrees, 20-25 mph winds. Day 2, warmer, raining, 20-25 mph winds. Day 3, snow, then clearing and cool, 20-35 mph winds.

If that is 12 inches I would hate to see a 30 incher!

The fish have definitely grown up on Vermilion. I was up there at our cabin over the opener and nearly every fish we caught was over 20″. I think it is great, but can see where some guys are getting ticked that they can’t get a limit of eaters. We probably only caught about three fish in the 15-17″ range between four of us fishing for three days. I think my favorite was some guy in a nearby boat complaining and saying “with this damn slot, this lake is just going to turn into a trophy walleye lake like Rainy Lake”. I just smiled and hoped he is right!

Great fish Dave! I have not caught one yet this year under 17″, closest I have come is 17 1/2″, fortunately I am a catch and release kind of a guy, but it would be good to catch an eater now and then!

No, we were trolling/drifting w/ lindy rigs and minnows. You can still see the small red hook in the corner of its mouth.
