I am not sure if this has been brought up yet, I see they want to increase ethanol in our fuel 10% to 15%

I’ve been steadily increasing my ethanol consumption since I started homebrewing . Some of the belgian brews are almost 10%, and I made a knock-your-socks-off strawberry wine that was near 20%. No major concerns so far…

    Ohhhhhhh, you mean for vehicles??

Kwik trip might still offer zero ethanol in thier premium gas. This usually goes in my boat/atv/mower/chainsaw… If anyone knows of any other gasoline chains that sell non-ethanol gas, I’d be interested in knowing which ones.

I think it is interesting to note that with the inception and subsuquent increases in ethanol to the gasoline, the engine manufactuers have kept up with the changing technology in cars and trucks but what about all the small engines and outboard engines for boating? Ethanol creates a very dry environment in equipment and for those who are running it in their small engines, lawnmowers, atvs, ect… and Boat engines it may not be a bad idea to use a gasoline additive to replenish the lost lubricity caused by the ethanol. Here is an example of such a product.

My personal opinion is too much over reaction to such a simple issue. I work with automobiles everyday and not once have we encountered an ethanol caused problem. I also ATV, a lot, and have logged many thousand miles between my ATVs and my friends and family. We use ethanol gas all the time, no problems. Our chainsaws are the same deal. It’s a non issue to me.

Now someone said something strawberry wine. That sounds mighty dang good right now!

I don’t know much science behind it, but I’ve been told to try to run non-ethanol gas to help prevent water absorption and possible line fouling, and also run a stabilizer/cleaner as well. Since I don’t run my engines as often as I would like, and I’m not a mechanic, I just follow what my dealer told me. But maybe they are just trying to sell more product?? I generally run Johnson 2+4 fuel additive/conditioner in my suzuki 140, but its no the cheapest stuff in the world. I would think sea-foam would work fine too??. Haven’t had issues yet, so maybe i’ll keep it up. Generally (unfortunately), I usually only run a few tanksful through it each season, so maybe its a bigger deal for me than for someone who runs the engine more regularly. (I could definately be wrong – I know little about much of this stuff). Other thoughts on this topic will be read with interest!

Yup, strawberry wine or a good horseradish-laden clamato bloody mary would go pretty darn good right now.

3 of our 8 gas stations in town have non-ethanol.

I was actually surprised to see today that I can actually get “100% Gasoline” if I still want it by buying premium grade. While I do run it on very hot days in my Mustang I just find it to be a waste of money to spend the extra.

I have a friend that likes the bloodies with clamato. She’s from Canada and calls them “Ceasars”. Rather elegant I think

It would be interesting to know why so many people are against giving our farmers more guaranteed crop sales??

BTW, I work in the ethanol industry currently. So, I’m curious to what marketing campaigns most have fallen to??

The groceries industry blamed large price hikes on ethanol. Not the case, proven by many studies, most significant the EPA. Big oil, well, go figure. Unlimited smear campaign funds. Ask anyone in the industry, corn based ethanol is not the end all solution, however, it’s the begining steps down the right paths.

So, why are many of you against it?

Less miles per gal is a big thing why I don’t use it. 3 MPG less on ethanol!

Absolutely! I was glad to see some local grocers put campaigns out last year explaining there was confusion over E-85 and grocery prices. They explained very well that grocers are not affected much at all by the ethanol fuel.

Bottom line for me is personal experience trumps hearsay. I get to sample a lot of customers comments regarding ethanol and it is very easy to discern between those who have actually used it from those who haven’t. Some don’t have the vehicles able to burn E-85 and want to while others have them that won’t try it. I can tell you the new technology puts to bed the concern of lowered MPG from ethanol. Maybe ethanol isn’t the solution. But what is the other alternative going strong besides the hybrids? Electric vehicles?

My 2 cents. No problem in vehicles other than lower mileage. I do now that in the last 2 1/2 years I have been using non-ethanol fuel in the F100 Yamaha. Since the switch I have had zero carb/fuel issues. Previous 3 years had carb related problems every summer.

Being totally ignorant on the subject, why do some of you run premium in your outboards? I have a 07 merc 90 and have never run anything but 87 octane. Based on your experience should I put in premium?

I guess I can’t think of a good reason we have Ethanol in the first place.

    So lets start there!
