Evinrude Question

    Hi Guys,
Thought I would ask all the experts on IDO a question. I recently bought a 98′ Champion with a 98′ 150 Evinrude from a boat dealership that was going out of business down in Arizona. The boat had been abandoned on their lot and was in pretty bad shape. But they had serviced and tuned up the motor in the 6th months prior to my purchasing it.

This morning I got the boat out of storage and was getting it ready to take it in for new upholstery when I noticed a couple of ounces of motor oil partially dried in the transom well. I had a marine mechanic briefly look at it when I was at the upholstery shop and he said it was coming from the oil pump but w/o actually working on the motor he couldn’t tell the extent of the problem.

Anyways I am leaving Arizona in a week to drive up to Wisconsin and am stopping in Missouri near Table Rock lake to visit a friend. I have always wanted to fish this lake and now I am seriously bummed. I don’t have time to take the boat in to be serviced (as it is already in the shop.)

Is it possible to disconnect the Oil Pump in any way so that it doesn’t run (maybe a fuse or something)?

If so, would I be good mixing the oil directly into the fuel? and finally what would be the best mixture to run?

Any advice on this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance for your help,
    Bob

I have a 95 evinrude 115 V4. when i bought it the previous owner said he burnt up the last oil pump and never replaced it. As for disconnecting it i’m not sure but i pour oil in the tank every time i put gas in. I believe for every 6 gallons i put in a pint of oil. i think that is 50 to 1. i’ve never had problems so i guess it works. you might want experiment a little bit. if it really smokes or not enough adjust the oil input. hopefully this helps, Dan

Just mix oil in the gas at 50 to 1,if the oil pump isn,t working your motor is covered, if it is working
it will only smoke a bit more.

Make sure you are using fresh gas and mix oil 50:1, as the others said. You may also want to run some seafoam through, since the motor was sitting for a long period.

thanks for the quick responses. I will mix it 50:1 and experiment from there. I’m anxious to see what the oil pump does when I have the motor running. I hope that I won’t have to listen to that low oil alarm the whole time I am running it if the pump isn’t working. Thanks again guys.
