Never knew I would be so attached to a dog. Lilly, my Brit ate a poisened mouse in the yard and is bleeding internally pretty bad. After a part of the day thinking she had a kidney stone, she started to pass blood vaginally. 11:00 last night we made the trip to the ER Vet in Waukesha knowing things were getting worse. As the night went on she was bleeding more and more. After all the tests, she was positive for mouse/rat poisen.
I got home around 5:30 or 6:00 this morning and could only get in a short nap. I knw if I stayed around the house, I would do something stupid so I went fishing out to Lake WI for a good part of the day. Ran into Mendotaeye, Joel, and two PIG walleyes. That got my mind to relax a bit, but I was was never really into fishing today.
So as soon as I got bac, walked around all the neighbor’s houses. Sure enough, one has DeCon packs out about 6′ around his house in his planting beds. I took one of them and gave all the active ingredience to the Vet. In his words “That’s a perfect match…” Neighbor’s not home right now which is probably a good thing. I am trying so hard to stay calm, but its tough. I know its an accident and he most likely didn’t have any intentions of this happening. Regardless, I think he’s responsible and needs to be accountable for his actions.

Tonights report from the vet was fair. Vitals are good, red blood cell count is low, and the blood is still not quadulating. Will be in the vets care for awhile. So far, the bill is racking up faster than the national debt. I just could not put her down.

    Tough news…..

Dogs are a man’s best friend.

Your neighbor did not intend to poison your dog. Be careful what you say as you can’t take words back, once they are out of your mouth. I am sure they will feel awful. They weren’t trying to hurt your dog, only the rodents.

You still have to live next to them.

I hope your dog pulls through and has a complete recovery.

I am so sorry to hear about your sweet friend. Thanks for sharing your story. It is a good reminder to everybody to be careful where these things are put. I received an outdoor plant from a friend one time to find out my lab chewed on it. After some vet time she was okay. But it sure made me think alot more about these kind of things.

    Prayers sent!

Just a quick update – Thank everyone and also for all the PM’s I received. Shes home, but has some major issues to over come (if she can) She has stopped bleeding and for now, the plasma and K supliment is working. She has an uncontrollable bladder making her urinate constantly – Yes, all over at any time. Vet has indicated that may improve with time…or possibly not.

I had the talk with the neighbor. He got all teared up and you could tell he is sincerely sorry. He’s also in construction and hasn’t worked in over a month. He committed to help on the vet bills, but if he has nothing to give, it doesn’t do any good.

Short term is 3 weeks of no activity for Lilly and absolutely nothing that can giver her a bruise, or she could continue to bleed again. It will be a long road to recovery.

Again, thanks for all the well wishes.

I hope she completely recovers. Hopefully I am not hijacking this thread but I think this is a good to bring up. This is a good example of why to get pet insurance. I think it cost me about $225 a year for my dog. I know some folks say they won’t waste money on a pet like that and would just put the dog down, but this is an example of an owner going the extra mile for his best friend and the insurance will make the vet bill more tolerable. Already this year my dog wouldn’t stop throwing up. The vet trip was $200 and I got around $120 of it back. Seems worth it to me.

Again, I hope she gets better.
