My family and I are looking for some suggestions for a lake and cabin rental in Minnesota for a week this summer. We haven’t lived here long so we don’t know the best places to go. We’ve heard of Brainerd and Bemidji, but the latter is so far away from SE Minnesota. We want pine trees and a clean cabin on a lake. We’re not really wanting to spend more than $1200 to $1300 for the week. Any recommendations?

Thanks in advance for your response!

Do a google search on the Longville and Walker, MN areas. Lots of nice family resorts, good fishing and other activities…

The thing about Brainerd is you have water parks, go carts, golf and of course shopping if needed!

If it’s all about the “cabin up north experience” then Walker area will suit you fine.

Since you are new to Minnesota don’t overlook the Duluth / North shore option. Easy drive from anywhere right up the freeway.

Good luck and enjoy all we have to offer in Minnesota.

Vermilion, Kabe, Rainey are all no further than Bemidji for you. Vermilion is closer, but a little more crowded than the other two. All 3 offer clean pine air, crystal clear night skies, great “up north” feel and awesome fishing.

I’m going to second the Alexandria Area its a great place check out woodland resort on Miltona, its away from the crowds great lake for fishing anything you want. Not only that is the fact that you can get to able 30 other lakes within about 10 or 15 minutes. Lots of options lots of lakes depending on what your looking for. Golf, water parks, Amusement park and lots of other options for teh ladies, while the guys get out fishing. Also Its not nearly as far as Bemijdi, Vermillion, Brainard. Good luck let me know if you have any questions email is [email protected]

Have you thought of Wisconsin at all? Chetek is a lot closer and has tons of affordable options. It is also a great fishing chain to catch fish. Hayward is a little north of that and you get more into the clear water lakes there…and pay for it also. Just a thought since you live in SE MN…

I have always liked the Cass Lake area. Since Anglers Beach got sold and torn down, we have been going to Birch Villa. Great fishing, covered docks, nice sandy beach, and the owners are awesome. If your wife wants to do something other than fish, its only a 1/2 hour down to Walker for all the shops or probably even closer to run over to Bemidji. It’s 300 miles from Rochester to cass Lake.

Tamarack Lodge on Lake Winni. They are a site sponsor and have a beautiful place. Even a pool for the kids. I’ve been there and will be going back again. Exactly 5 hrs from Rochester

I will second a vote for lake Vermillion. We went there last year and have already booked 2 four day stays for this year, You also might want to think about the Spirit Lake Iowa area. Lots of family stuff to do and great fishing including one of the few blue water lakes in the US.

Can a guy really find a place on Vermilion for $1300 a week?

Absolutely. Nice places for 2 for $500-600/week. 3 bedroom cabins at resorts for 5-6 people run $1,000-1,200 or so, but some private cabins are less.

We are staying at a private cabin rental for the opener this year. We seem to trade off every other year between privates and resorts.

If anyone wants a recommendation, let me know!

    Dave —

I would like the recommendations or even where to start looking, or is it as simple as googling the lake?

http://www.lakevermilion.com gives lots of decent info.

If you want more specific info, just ask (where to stay, what you are targeting, etc).

The east and west end of the lakes, although connected, are very different water and are a long way apart by car or boat.

As long as everyone’s talking about there favorite…I have one too!

This is from 2006, but nothing has changed…and it’s as close to God as a person can get without a passport.
