I’m looking to purchase a 1991 Alumacraft 190 Trophy (I/O cobra 4.3) for my son and his family. It has trl motor, 15hp Force kicker and locator. The problem is it has a leak coming somewhere through the transom or motor area, have not pinpointed it yet. This boat was stored indoors, and has not been run in two years. The boat belongs to a freind of mine and was told by BO that it was a TRANSOM leak and would cost in the neibor hood of 4-5 k to repair.
It may be a minor repair or it could be expensive repair. With the info. provided and the exspensive repair what is this boat worth? I put it in the water today and there was a steady stream of water that was coming in just above the plug hole. Any ideas or thoughts on this. My son can get this fixed at no cost to him, but what is it worth “as is”? Any and all help is much appreciated. We got the motor running and it runs great, the exterior looks good but all the seats are shot and need replacement, I would rate it at below average for the condition of the boat as a whole

My 2 cents. I wouldn’t touch it with a ten foot pole. There are plenty of used boats out there for sale, especially now with the economy there are some very good deals. Transom’s if compromised are difficult for an outboard boat, but I can’t imagine what you would get into with an I/O.

    Good Luck.

Personally I would stay away from it too. Too old and has what could be a very big problem. Theres lots of boats out there for sale.
    Thanks, Bill

Those I/O’s can be money pits. Given that it is 18 years old with the overall condition being “below average” it really doesn’t sound like it would be worth much of anything. Personally I would look elsewhere.

No, $3000 seems high to me. We’re talking about an 18 year old boat with a transom leak with I/O power and a below average overall condition.

Is there a trailer? What condition is it in?

Are you absolutely positive the transom leak can be fixed at no cost to your son? The reason I ask is it sounds like there’s some question remaining about the leak location and extent. Also, what caused the leak?

Did you put the boat on the water and run it or did you test it with muffs? The reason I ask is I’ve known several friends that ran into I/O issues where the motor would run great at idle but didn’t have power to plane due to poor compression and other various issues.

NO don’t do it or you will be on here later telling us it was a mistake. Good Luck with what you decide to do, but just remember one thing with a boat. The most importent part is the motor, the second most important part is the transom. Just my .02
