I for one will be very sad to see the great commentator gone from my fall weekends. I could tune into a game John was calling and watch the entire thing even between two teams I have no interest in. Madden is and was a special man in football. Thanks for all the good times John madden!

He was really great for the game, annoying at times when he would jump on certain players bandwagons but still fun to listen to

I’m sure Madden and Farve will enjoy a wonderful retirement together

Are you guys serious? That’s the greatest news I’ve heard today. John Madden was nothing more than a babbling idiot. I hated his commentary and would cringe when I found out he was commentating games I wanted to watch. Good riddance John! Thank god I don’t have to listen to how great Brett Farve is anymore.

“You see the running back hit the hole, then he goes outside the hole, then there’s no hole when he tries to go in the hole.” – Madden, need I say more

Nothing sad coming from me. I couldnt stand listening to the guy. If someone is doing good he really talks them up like they are a superstar. If not then you never hear him mention his name till he does something good at all. I have no sadness to see him leave.

Tough to say that he didn’t do a lot for the game! Like him or not he has been a fixture at the highest level of football for a long time. Something that can not be said by many. Also; to have worked for all the major broadcasters (ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX) is quite an accomplishment!

They say imitation is the highest form of flattery and we all know how to imitate guys like Madden or Keith Jackson, Howard Cossell, who were all legendary announcers.

Love him or hate him he left his mark on the game!

I also couldn’t stand to listen to him announce a game. Years ago, and I mean years, I didn’t mind him as much. He hasn’t changed a thing since then and has come to annoy many people. I agree that many people do try to imitate him, but he was a state the obvious type of guy.
I see a lot of other annoucers the same way, the color guys don’t add much to the color of a game anymore!
He was a good coach and left an impact on the game but he will not be missed by me!

Madden is a legend and I will miss him. There will be no way to replace a man of his caliber–but Collingsworth is so wrong!

I have to say I it won’t be the same with him gone. It’s easy to go both ways but he was very colorful and if you knew about football, he probably annoyed you some, but for the novice and people just tuning in he explained it at that level consistently. He is a legend and will definily be missed!

Agreed! I’m guessing he called Favre and asked if this retirement was for real, and once he got the word he figured there was no more reason to show up.

“you score a touch down that’s 6 point.” Really?! I thought it was based on style points!

He sux, period. Out loud, in print, even on mute. Why not just bring back Dennis Miller for pete’s sake.

I didn’t mind Madden… except for his … and then…and then… and then…. Dierdork… you can keep him and his “perennial probowler” line he uses on everyone…. Collinsworth….. oh boy, he gets so full of himself, I think sometimes he hardly realizes their is a game being played….

I agree with some of you that he was annoying at times.

However, I will miss the sound of his voice because it was so closely related to football. He was one of those guys when you heard him, you knew there was something good on the tube!

Much to the chigrin (sp?) of Jeff George the packers intercepted that one. I learned what that word meant thanks to Dan. Every game he would say that a few times.

I liked him more this last year. I didn’t like the ace hardware ads era or the rambling era when he talked about random places and food a lot. I liked dennis miller. he was actually interested in the strategy of each play. most of the announcers seem to keep track of the score and that’s about it.

Madden was great for football. He said some pretty dumb stuff and was always good for a laugh. It was a good run.

One problem… who is going to kiss Favres now?

I know a guy that would mute the TV and tune the radio in, if the game was being announced by Madden.

I have to admit I am a little surprised at the anti Madden sentiment. Even more surprised at the moronic remarks some, I’m assuming kids, have made here. But to each his own either way. For all that mute their T.V.s (Worked better before the broadcast delays) or changed the channels there were obviously many many more that didn’t. Madden was part of the highest rated NFL broadcasts for many years.
