It’s that time of the season again… Does anyone know when the best time to spray for weeds and still be able to seed your lawn works? Or what order to go about it?

I was told to wait till the lilacs start to bud and then go for it. Why, I have no idea, but it works for me-jerr
April 9, 2009 at 9:36 pm #767197I like to put down a straight fertilizer early (Mid March). I usually only apply half the recomended amout. Then as the soil temp rises I put down the crabgrass peventer (mid April). As far as treating other weeds I always keep some weed b gone mixed up in a small sprayer. I’ll carry that with me every time I mow and hit the dandilions and such that pop up.

April 9, 2009 at 9:51 pm #767203You need to put the crap grass preventer on before the ground temp gets to 65 degrees. Just remember that if you put that on, you can’t put any grass seed down……it won’t germinate. Best time to start grass is the frist part of Sept. because the winter fertlizer helps the growth.

Heck no. If it was up to me, I’d fertilize my yard with gas. It doesn’t grow near as well and requires a lot less time and effort. More time to play.

i actually turned part of my yard into food plot for the neighborhood deer
April 9, 2009 at 10:23 pm #767216If you put down something to stop crabgrass from germinating, that will also prevent other grasses from germinating, including any seed you intentionally put down. And germination happens shortly after the ground is warm enough for the Lilacs to bloom. If you are using weed killer, you have two choices. Something like Round-up, which kills everything, and a broadleaf killer, which will only hurt grass if it is put on too heavily.
I would just spot-spray the visible weeds when they pop up, and put down your grass seed ASAP. Use broadleaf killer for things like Dandelions, but any grasses you want to kill are going to need Roundup, or somethink similar.
April 9, 2009 at 10:28 pm #767218Your looking at 45-60 days post crab grass preventer to seed, read the bag as they vary. If you toss a little new top soil down, you may be able to push it some. Note this if you compost your clippings too, they will contain the crab grass killer after being cut and will impede growth elsewhere. End of April if you do the preventer usually works well depending on soil temp as mentioned. The UofMN ag site is good for advice too. Luck!
