i trap all three up here in northern mn just using a minnow trap from walmart. i out dog food in it and throw it in with a rope tied to it.. Just leave it in for a few hours and its got minnows.. usually pretty full.

When we trap here we use a couple sleces of stale dried bread and leave the trap overnight. Just like river fishing location is critical and deep holes or current breaks are prime locations
Due to new rules to control the spread of VHS, I wonder if the bait shop can legally buy them from you?
I’m pretty sure, legally anyway, the only waters you can use self caught bait on are the same waters you caught the bait from.
I also saw your post over on LL. I was going to post there, but I try not to register unless I really want to say something. I had seen something about the same subject earlier.
As Joel said, the VHS thing is going to be something that you will have to deal with. I may be wrong, but to sell to the bait shops, you will have to be licensed and then provide some type of testing to the DNR regarding the site you are getting the bait from and whether it is free of VHS.
Then you will probably be able to make a little coin on the side. I know the bait shops are pretty picky about where they are buying since the VHS and testing came along. Good luck!!!

To be honest, I sort of forgot about that VHS. About 4 years i had caught some with a smelt net and brought them to a bait shop. And at that time they were going to buy them from me. But i never could get the numbers i needed. So with spring on the brain i thought i would tackle it again.
So until the rules change i am screwed. Oh Well , Another get rich quick skeem gone down the drain.
