MINNEAPOLIS (AP) – A federal magistrate judge has given final approval to settlements in two religious discrimination lawsuits involving Gold’n Plump Poultry Inc.

Under a consent degree approved last week by Magistrate Judge Jeanne Graham, St. Cloud-based Gold’n Plump will add a paid break to the second half of each shift. That will accommodate Muslims who want to pray during the work day. The chicken processor will also pay $215,000 to 128 Somali-American Muslims who claimed religious discrimination, including discharge and discipline.

In a related case involving an employment agency, The Work Connection, another $150,000 will be paid to 28 people. They refused to sign forms stating they would not refuse to handle pork if they were referred to work at Gold’n plump facilities in Cold Spring, Minn., and Arcadia, Wis.

OK is it just me ? or if you cant handle pork because of your religion then why would you work at a pork processing factory.

If you think we need to bend over backwards for your beliefs, then feel free to return to your $#!*hole third world country you came from, and take the federal magistrate judge with you.

This post is probably well on it’s way to getting flagged if we throw out too much personal opinion, but I am in total agreement with your sentiment

Well, that’s the way the whole country is going……..”press 1 for english”……..oh hell no…….how about “if you no habla engles……..go home!”

We raise chickens for Gold’n Plump in Arcadia…..and we don’t process any pork here at our plant……but I think the St. Cloud plant still does the bacon wrapped chicken filets…..but I’m with you……do the job or go home. They have always been fair to all the employees…….but there is no pleasing some of them.

Now Governor Doyle is sticking it to them too. Since he, like the other politicians, can’t learn how to spend only what you have……..he wants to put a slaughter tax on all animals slaughtered in WI. That would cost GP about $430,000 per year……..and it will affect beef, pork, sheep, if this keeps up, there won’t be any business left in WI.

I have nothing against other cultures.

I do have something against our policy makers though…

    Who IS the EEOC?

    Quote:

Religious discrimination charge filings with EEOC offices nationwide increased to a record level of 3,273 in Fiscal Year 2008, a 13.6% jump over FY 2007. On July 22, 2008, the EEOC issued a new Compliance Manual Section regarding religious discrimination, harassment, and accommodation. The EEOC issued this Section in response to an increase in charges of religious discrimination, increased religious diversity in the United States, and requests for guidance from stakeholders and agency personnel investigating and litigating claims of religious discrimination. The Section is available online at http://www.eeoc.gov/policy/docs/religion.html The EEOC enforces federal laws prohibiting employment discrimination. Further information about the EEOC is available on the agency’s web site at http://www.eeoc.gov.

Whatever happened to the good of all out weighs the good of individuals?

    Quote:

“Employers need to recognize the increasing diversity of religion in our country and provide accommodations as required by federal employment discrimination laws,” stated EEOC Acting Chairman Stuart J. Ishimaru. “Systemic cases such as these make workplaces better for many individuals.”

I don’t think they got screwed at all, I think they brought it on themselves by hiring these people. Rather than hire “local” people, or people who traditionally held those jobs when the company had its origins, they decided that hiring someone who would work for far less money was more important. Great business decision and now they get what they paid for. And if you think I’m picking on Gold-n-plump, I’m not…my sentiments go for all companies that overload their work-force with these people.

I agree, they should have hired locals. But I don’t think the judge made the right decisions either, I think they should have let the public vote on all matters. A one a week voting stations would be packed

We’ll have to watch the comments in here. If we want a discussion…or this post will be over with.

From my understanding, GP legally had to hire these people. Am I wrong?

GP probably has little choice on who the hire and fire without it being said that they are discriminating. The biggest problem starts with the judge and the law makers. The law is probably wrong in most of our opinions and the judge is wrong to interpret the law as she did. Did I mention that I am also upset with Big E as he is at P4 fishing for four days? It bothers me more every time I look at his empty desk here at work.

Its a truly terrible situation. Makes me sick to think about what our country is becoming. We are well on our way to being a sespool of all the worlds rejects. And while they flood in in massive numbers, keep in mind the fact that we pay for it.

I do somewhat agree with the idea of GP bringing it on themselves though. Dont know what choice they had in hiring them, maybe they had to hire them to avoid jihad…

Sadly, larger organizations are held to hiring XX amount of minorities. Those quotas are very closely watched by our government in many organizations.

We voted in the people that made these laws, only we can vote them out.

Are you guys kidding me? Most of you might as well be talking about the Irish in the 1800’s. “I can’t believe anyone ever let the Irish off the boats. They’re all a bunch of drunks and they’ll ruin this country.”

“I bet they are all named Mohammed!” Who the hell cares what their names are?

“They should hire all local people.” Do you think the employees are commuting from overseas?

“If you won’t touch pork, you shouldn’t work in a pork processing factory.” No kidding, but they weren’t. The article says they were working for an employment agency.

“Larger organizations are forced to hire a certain number of minorities.” Point me to a law or rule you’re referring to. The law prohibits discriminatory hiring and employment practices, but that’s much different than a quota. The law at issue is the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The EEOC was established as part of the Act as well, in 1965. This stuff has been around for more than 40 years; it’s nothing new.

A pork processing plant would not have to accommodate a person’s religion if it said they couldn’t touch pork. The law requires a reasonable accommodation, and that’s it.

I could argue that the afternoon break isn’t a reasonable accommodation, that it unduly burdens Gold’n Plump. But then I might also have to argue that any employee in any business could be forced to work on Sundays or Christmas. Then all an employer has to do to get rid of every practicing Christian is to require employees to work on Sundays and fire everyone who doesn’t. That’s what the law protects against. These are the points you should be arguing against. I argue against many of them, too. I think there are a ton of crap laws that are unnecessary burdens on businesses. But I’m not sure that the Civil Rights Act of 1964 is one of them.

Anyway, I hope this thread gets dusted soon. It’s just plan embarrassing to see some of the stuff you guys wrote.
